Gpu at 55% power when idle making temps at 44 degrees idle

Hello and thanks for view my thread. I have a gigabyte 770 oc and when I start my computer it is using 7% power ind the temps are a very nice 27 degrees. At some point during usage the power gets stuck at 55% and idle temps level out at 44 degrees.

I have run anti malware programs and looked in the task manager for abnormal programs but nothing out of the ordinary there.

Please advise, thanks in advance.

I think he means that GPU usage is at 55% when idle which is obviously out of the ordinary and it is leading to high temps for idle (44 degrees).

Now, 44 degrees isn't anything to be too concerned about but you should check to see all drivers are updated and also check event viewer or task manager for any processes that might be running in the background and using your GPU. Also run a virus scan

thanks for your answers so far. Eric the red has it spot on. It is a new graphics card as for some reason the power usage gets stuck at 55 percent and forcing that much power through the card causes the temps to rise.

I have installed the newly released nvidia drivers today and I am still getting this problem. Could something in the GFX card bios be causing this? I really dont know but it causes a fan speed increase as to cool the card down which in turn raises the db level to the point that I can hear it which is rather annoying.

@eric did all that and nothing that would be causing gpu strain. Also run malewarebytes and nothing.

I found out what it was.

For some reason when I open the outlook app in windows 8 it causes my gfx card to go to 55% power, strangely. When I shut outlook down the card wasn't returning to normal speed as outlook was still running in the background. After turning it off in task manager everything went back to normal.

This is very strange. Anyone heard of anything like this before? Can someone with windows 8 monitor their GFX card power % on msi afterburner after opening outlook (mail app) and see if it's happening to them?

I don't use outlook so I can't personally say, but I don't seem to be finding anything online about a similar issue. You can maybe try running outlook in Windows 7 compatibility mode? Otherwise check if opening outlook is creating any errors in the event log?

Worst case scenario, you can just stop using the Outlook desktop app and only use the web app.
