Hi there,

i've got my rig up and running and have been really happy with it so far, but then i have been playing a limited selection of not too demanding games..

i loaded up F.E.A.R last night and was having terrible 'tearing' on the corners of every wall..
i'd walk past them and they'd go all pixalated… and fuzzy/torn…

Then i tried Crysis (1) put the graphics on MAX and it looked Beautiful…… when standing still.
but as soon as i moved the mouse the trees would flicker from light to dark colours… in a strobing fashion,,, and just the trees….?
Everything else was amazing,,, not sure what fps i was getting but definitely well above 60...
However it was completely game-breaking as there are so many trees and it got disorientating with them flickering like that…

interestingly the 'palm bushes' were fine… it was just the big fluffy trees… that as soon as a moved the mouse or the character would start strobing at me.
i played Crysis on the PS3 and didn't have this strobing issue…
i don't know what's up…?
i've heard of the 290x having problems with pre- DX11 games,,,, but i would've guessed crysis is a dx11?

the exact card i have is the 290x vaporx - in crossfire..
the rest of the rig is high spec also..

I've only installed the drivers from the CD…. maybe there is a newer driver, or something??
all i know… is currently certain games are completely unplayable…
i'm using a HD TV as a monitor…. - just waiting till i can get a gaming monitor..

(BTW i also tried Crysis on lowest settings, and the tearing was still there)

What to do?
Thankyou,
Rx

Hi TopLuca, thanks for your reply.

I used something called AMD Catalyst from right clicking the desktop and it had an option of find latest driver e.t.c…
i got it installed it.. but it hasn't helped, in fact; when i booted crysis it started in windowed mode… and also 1080p/24hz input…????
before it was on 1080p/60hz input..

I also used the AMD Catalyst software to 'enable crossfire'….? … i thought it was enabled by default…?

But alas none of this has made a difference at all… - everything looks and runs beautifully apart from the disco trees.. - they are literally strobing and have weird lines moving over them.. but confined to just the trees.

bit disappointed really….. spend ~£1000 and graphics cards and can't play a ~10 year old game….. wtf.

Cheers,
R

ok now another thing; since making these changes - the sapphire logo on the top GPU has now turned yellow… -
before they were both blue… now ones blue and ones yellow… and all my games aren't working properly even the ones that were before…

man i have the shitest luck with computers.. - oh yeah and the fans are as loud as a washing machine. :heink:

hey there, i just messed around a bit to see what happened.

The second GPU turned yellow when when i 'activated' Crossfire in the AMD Catalyst program..
i downloaded the driver from the website…. - (which was different from the driver the AMD Catalyst suggested for me….?)

But i'm still getting the windowed mode… - it starts off windowed and @ 1080p/60hz and then when i press 'full screen' in game it refreshes into 1080p/24hz mode… - it didn't do that when i first started playing (even though the graphics of the trees were messed up bad)…

i'm a bit apprehensive about removing a GPU, as i had someone help me put it together and i'm a bit scared to take it apart on my own.. (new to build your own PCs.)
i think i might call AMD first and ask them what the hell they're thinking…
then i'll try removing a card,, - what do you think that will uncover?
do you reckon one of the cards is faulty??
(one of the 40-50 heatsink metal bits wasn't connected… but other than that it seemed fine…)

thanks TopLuca

It sounds like one of the cards is faulty. What is your PSU?
Try just one in the top PCI-E slot, then remove that one after testing it and put the other one in there. Re-test and tell us the results.
Best of luck :) Let us know how you go.

holy shit one of them just turned RED.!!!

i started up tomb raider 2013.. ran the in-game benchmark test - and both cards went yellow…. (i had 42min fps 50avg)
the noise was very tolerable..

then i went into settings and found everything on normal…?? so i bumped them all up to ultra (including 16x anisotropic and 4xssa)
ran the bench mark…. - fans start going MAD way to noisy and i looked over at the cards and one was yellow and one was Red…!/?
funny thing was i then had 121 min fps….. (i took off double buffering v-sync… completely…) but apart from having no v-sync i had it on ultra with 121 fps min!!!!! which was pretty awesome…

however i feared it was going to explode… so i had to quit.
So i gather yellow is really busy and red is overloaded??

what the heck is going on… - the fans were running so loud i couldn't hear the game…
So i guess the GPUs were not coping…

another weird anomaly,,,, the game booted in 50hz mode….. - i changed it to 60hz… it seemed fine with that.. but why put it at 50hz in the first place???
well 121fps min was about the only cool thing other than mind-blowing graphics..

i'm really stuck, i've got a Storm-Stryker cool master case,,, it has four fans… and i've got a cool master cpu fan (with heatsinks)….
4ghz haswell…. - dunno whats up...

ok,, i'll have to look up about grounding :) already been struck by lightning and mains volt - neither very fun.

The PSU is an area i apparently 'skimped out on'…… i thought 850w was plenty but i've been told i shoulda got a 1000w Psu. haha.. POWER.
i have a 850w seasonic 80+bronze
and the gpus full product name is: Sapphire 290x vaporx tri-x OC 4gb…

i'll try one at a time - what should i be looking for once i change to the top slot??.. - in game difference or ….. i dunno - some benchmark software e.t.c.

thank you both,
R

The 850W will really struggle with two cards , When you remove one of the cards and move the other to the top slot ; Do your regular game testing and heat testing as well as Fans Round up then see how good the single card alone will perform ( also Check the color of the card , I think It will be mostly yellow ).

hey Alex Kelly, of course.. i'll probably have a camera within the hour so hopefully i'll be able to upload a picture soonish.

i did notice Serious heat coming out of the back fan - (taking it away from the gpus)…..
the cpu fan seemed quite cool...

TopLuca - what would be the downsides of not enough power? i thought they'd under clock..
They seem to be overheating - could that be PSU related…?

but yeah i'll run some tests with just the one.. and then the other.
Rx

Overheating ....Then the cause won't be the PSU , I think maybe your case doesn't have enough air flow to it.
