I'm not really sure if the CPU actually affects games as a game of Battlefield 4 runs on 80fps on ultra everything but I can only run Total War Shogun 2 on 30fps on medium settings, is this because total war has more stuff to load so the CPU cant take it or is it me just being an idiot. Please help.

Graphics card: Sapphire R9 280X Toxic.
CPU: Amd a10-5800k quad-core, 3.8Ghz (overclocked to 4Ghz)

Total war probably is probably not capable of using all your cores, where as BF4 is. Your CPU has pretty low per core performance, so a CPU dependent game only using 1 or 2 cores will probably perform worse than one using all 4.

Most games primarily use the GPU for rendering and higher frame rates but some games can and will take advantage of a stronger CPU that has more cores and correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've heard, future games will use more CPU cores and it will be better in the long-run to get a stronger CPU for gaming as well.
