Hi everyone! I'm having a annoying problem with my computer and I'm not sure what is going on. I'm not very techy but i have a 4-5 year old Gateway computer, the stickers on it say Windows Vista, dolby, graphics by nvidia and intel core 2. I have downloaded this online game called Shaiya and I've been playing it for years on this computer, and about a year ago I deleted and a few weeks ago I redownloaded it. It played perfectly for awhile then the next day I used it and it turned off randomly, the whole computer just shut down unexpectedly. I deleted and with hopes again redownloaded it, but it keeps shutting down. I've googled it and I've asked people what they think is happening but there isn't any good answers. There is plenty of storage on the computer or it wouldn't have downloaded it and the computer is not overheating. Please I need help ><

What are your temps when stress testing?

Use Prime95 for stress testing the CPU and furmark for the GPU. Use HWmonitor or similar to get your temps while running these programs. Leave them running for atleast 10 minutes to get your max temps. Don't run them both at the same time.

When a computer shuts down without warning, meaning your screen goes black and there is no "Shutting Down" on windows, it usually means the motherboard detected an issue and shut down to prevent further damage.

The most common cause for this is the CPU overheating or PSU (Power Supply Unit) going bad.

If you haven't changed your CPU's thermal paste in that long, you may need to do that and it could fix the issue.

Does your computer make any sounds when it shuts down? -Either fast looping audio (on speakers/headset) or a sound emitting from within the computer?

I will have to see if that works, because honestly I'm stumped and quite annoyed. There is no sound when it goes off, it just turns off and I have Norton on my computer to detect if certain things are safe to download and it said the game was, so idk why it would be shutting down to protect it from being damaged..

Since you're not that tech savvy you'd probably be best off taking it to a computer shop (please, not best buy/geek squad, they rip you off so hard) Its probably a pretty easy fix. (most times when a PC is just shutting down its due to heat so it doesn't burn it self up)

The solution to this takes maybe 5 minutes and just requires you to unscrew a heatsink (basically a hunk of aluminum) put some thermal paste then rescrew down the heatsink. Thats really it, so don't let the guy behind the counter con you into thinking its some amazing witchcraft.

It can also be your power supply is going bad, again not a hard fix just grab a new one and pop it in, screw it down and connect all the cables. Takes maybe 10 minutes if they are extremely busy.

Heck if you have a family member thats good with computers throw him 30-40 bucks (much cheaper than shops and still quite a good price for him/her) assuming he knows enough to fix it.
