How do I keep the HDMI signal from my computer to my receiver alive, even when switching or turning off the display?

Hey all,

I'm having an issue with my setup using a Windows 7 PC connection via HDMI to my Onkyo TX-SR313 receiver. Basically, whenever I switch to another HDMI input or even power off my monitor I hear a "hardware disconnect/connect" sound from Windows. This causes issues, such as crashing the game I was playing on the PC or re-sizing windows and moving them around.

When you disconnect a DVI monitor there are no hardware disconnection sounds, and the computer continues to run as if nothing happened except you can't visually see it. This is the situation I want.

I'm assuming it loses the connection between the receiver/monitor and computer, then assumes some display hardware was disconnected. Any help or info would be appreciated. Thanks.

HDMI does handshaking to determine some things about the display. If you turn off or switch the input of your receiver, this is expected behavior. DVI doesn't do this because it doesn't actively check to see if the plug is connected to the monitor.

My radeon 6650 doesn't do this on my set up, do you have nvidia?

Nah, it's an ATI Radeon HD 4850. Yes, it's old.

So why doesn't your 6650 do this if HDMI always will?

- Edit -
I think it has something to do with display auto detection in Windows 7. I was looking at this thread from elsewhere. Look for the guy talking about "DMMEnableDDCPolling". I tried adding registry keys, but it didn't work.
