Dell Inspiron N4050
Windows 7 Ultimate

Hi everyone, I hope you can help me.

I was browsing the internet, my laptop froze, I pushed the power button for 6 secs untill it turned off. But after that, everytime I turn it on, it won't start windows, after the windows loading screen a Blue screen with this error "stop: c0000185 The I/O device reported an I/O error." blinks for 1 sec, and then restarts by it self,

I have tried starting in safe mode, but happens the same, it tries to load windows, and again that blue screen with the same error blinks for 1 sec and restarts again, I also tried repairing the O.S. with my Installation Disk but a window pops saying the Repairing tool version missmatches the windows version. I think that is because my installation disk is the base windows 7 without SP1, and the laptop is updated to win7 SP1 I dont know what to do now, I don't want to re-install windows, but if there is no other option..

Sorry for my English, is not my mother language.
Thanks in advance!

Most likely the HDD is broken/corrupted, as proven by the SAFE MODE. If this is still under warranty you can appeal to Dell for support as the drive shouldn't be failing (unless you dropped it etc.) If your main concern is a working computer the issue otherwise is cost effectiveness; the chkdsk showed ALOT of errors and even reinstalling Windows (WHICH WIPED OUT ALL YOUR DATA!!!) it still not working well, Dell says too bad, your Windows isn't working, the PC is useless what to do? Well you could try and buy a replacement HDD and swap it out at that point but a HDD is around $100-149 (1TB is the norm, 7200RPM), but a new laptop can be had for $249, and with the back to school sales there is a expectation systems MAY be sold as low as...

Hello there!

Looks like there might be a corrupt file preventing you from booting up properly. You can have you windows diagnose the issue and possibly fix it on its own.

To do this boot from the Windows 7 DVD or Windows Recovery Environment (F8)->[1] and run the command prompt and run this:

chkdsk C: /r /f

This should start checking your drives for any issues and attempt to fix it.

Let me know what your results are.

Thank you nubbsauce, I have donde what you said, but after the diagnose I get this "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50", and still won't load winodws.

Do you think my H.D.D is dying?

Your Data is mostly likely lost by normal means, you would need either a tech to remove the drive then use a SATA to USB on a secondary computer to try and scan for any data to recover. The pricing though would be a few hundred dollars IF they can even get any data off. Otherwise you have to send it to a Data Recovery Specialist, then you're talking thousands of dollars.

First things first, call Dell and give them your invoice. Depending on when you purchased the computer, you might be entitled for a warranty replacement part or at the least a RMA. If by chance you are no longer under a warranty, you will have to purchase a new HDD which isn't much honestly.

Depending on what size and speed you want, you can pay anywhere between 60-200 dollars. I recommend Western Digital (WD) as they have been nothing but amazing towards me. I still have a HDD from about 7-8 years ago still working as a slave drive. If this is the option you would like to go with, let me know what size and speed you want, and your price range and I'll find you a HDD and you can start using your computer again in 3 days or less.

As for the tech, I wouldn't bother. You could attempt to do it yourself when you get a new HDD and just set the other drive as a salve to where you can still pull the files off it. The best part about that is, it's free. Now if your files don't even show up when you do that, might as well boot from cd, do a full format, and use it as a slave with no OS and just a storage unit.

Let me know what you want to do. Whether its Dell RMA or just buy a new one, I'll help you through it.

**Edit** For the slave hdd, you can buy a housing and connect it through a Sata to USB. I believe newegg will have those adapters so you can just use it as an external from then on.

Thanks to all for your answers, at the end, the H.D.D. was faulty, I replaced it with a brand new H.D.D., I could mount the faulty Drive in a desktop PC as slave drive, I backed up almost all my data, in some folders I got the same I/O error, so I couldn't back up that data, but that was mostly music, my important data was all backed up.

Thanks again to all you guys that guided me in the right path.
