All was well, then I installed Ubuntu Linux on a partition, I then removed Ubuntu and that was the start of a host of problems (MBR etc.) But here is the real problem, I tired of trying to rescue the XP SP3 and start over, I used my XP SP2 disc to bring up the service console, I ran fixmbr and chkdsk /r, both ran ok but did not bring back XP SP3. So I decided to just load my XP SP2, Windows said that there was an existing installation and would I like to repair it, so I hit the r key and enter, it loaded a ton of files then it rebooted and since then both CD and HD are tagged as disabled in BIOS. I have chosen default values in BIOS, verified boot orders, etc. many times, then I removed the CMOS battery for 24 hours, then I changed the BIOS jumper cables from 1-2 to 2-3 to 1-2 and still nothing, I disconnected the CD and HD and fired up the computer then hooked them back up, still nothing. Please give me an answer , I am stumped. Windows offer to repair the existing installation was the culrit in locking me out of the CD and HD. Thank You. PS I need XP to run legacy equipment, no other option. Leo

I purchased this computer used, there is no name, it appears there was once a label on the front. There is a large bold "H" with a lower case "h" inside it embossed on the sides of the case. So I will supply info on the components.
*Motherboard, Intel D865GBF, Desktop.
*Pentium4, 2.4, 800 sys bus, 400 sys mem.
*BIOS version: BF86510A.86A.0060.P16 (Function J9J4)
*Running single channel (3 x 512)
*HDD, 3M-Maxtor 6Y160P0, ULTRA DMA MODE ATA/100
*ATAPI CD-ROM 4S-SONY CD-RW CRX300E
I can only access the BIOS, nothing else.
Goal 1, Get CD to work so I can wipe the drive and install XP SP2.
Goal 2, Get Current XP SP3 working again, not hopeful on this as I have tried many times but I will listen and try what you have to say.
Additional attempts I made to access system since first post, I attached a USB thumb drive and then a USB external hard drive, they were both recognized by the BIOS but they too were tagged as "disabled". I tried putting the USB hard drive as first to boot but that also did not work. Why would Windows make this happen when it was supposed to repair the existing OS-XP-SP3????

Please note that there will be a delay in getting back to you each time as my laptop just died and I am using a very busy "house" computer.

Thank You,
Leo
