PC shuts down while booting windows

Dear troubleshooters, I have just ran in to trouble with my desktop computer. Help is much appreciated hence it's my working computer where I do video editing work and manage my productions. I need this issue to be fixed asap!

I have build my own desktop and it worked like a charm, recently (2 moths ago) upgraded to 16 gb of rams and it runs for over 2,5 years without problems. But tonight it suddenly crashed after a extended run time of about 4 hours. The crash gave me a sudden black screen into an instant reboot. When the pc rebooted it passed the Motherboard screen into the loading windows screen, at the instant it tries to load windows it shuts down with a sudden black screen (no sounds).

So I tried the following things to figure out where the problem lies.
Entering and staying in the BIOS menu does work.

- Disconnecting all Hard disks except the ssd boot. (did not help)
- Disconnecting the boot drive (ssd) and connecting a different hdd and boot windows from dvd ( PC shuts down when it starts booting the windows dvd *Loading windows files* )
- Disconnecting all the Memory modules and testing them 1 by 1 in different slots (did not help)
- Disconnecting all the usb wires etc. (did not help)
- Checking all cables (did not help)


So I'm assuming since I'm capable of entering the bios without problems it shouldnt be my PSU or GPU right? My processor (i5 2500k) is running at 50 degrees in bios menu. Could be my processor or Motherboard?

What do you guys/girls think? Thanks for helping!

50°C just in BIOS? your CPU is overheating, that is for sure. Unless you have really high room temps, the CPU shouldnt idle at more than 40°C.
So the questions are:
What are your room temps?
Are you using the stock cooler?
How is the airflow inside the case of the PC?

Hi guys thanks for commenting, Im not able to test this your solutions out right now. Its quite dusty in the case the room temp is at about 24 degrees celcius. Ive got a good cooler installed on my processor, but its a good idea to remove the dust and reinstall it with new cooling fluid. Not sure if thats the problem tho!

Alex Kelly my computer shuts entirely down indeed! I was thinking about my PSU aswell, but if my PSU would be dead how would it be able to run BIOS at all?

I'm gonna watch your video solution when I wake up and try it out, need to sleep now (Netherlands).

So I tried the PSU test you mentioned, my PSU seemed to work fine (The fan kept spinning). Not sure how bulletproof that test is though.

Room temp is ok, airflow in my case is also good. I have a good cpu cooler.

Rewired everything in my case again, cleared some dust in my case and rebooted my system, the windows loading continued a bit longer and then it shut down again.

So my CPU temperatures are around 45 Degrees now in BIOS. I chose to disable the 'CPU overheating protection' function in bios. Just to look what would happen when I booted. So I booted up and again while loading windows the computer shut down again. But this time it showed a bluescreen for a split second, I managed to video the error.

That's exactly what I was thinking :) , but as I mentioned earlier this can't be it. Because I did this test:

I disconnected all the HDD's, connected a working clean SSD I use for other purposes and booted from my windows install DVD.
It starts loading in windows files, and after that process it immediately shuts down again...

Hey thanks for the efforts!
Apparently my processor cooler was broken, an attachment screw was broken. So the processor was overheating, and my motherboard wasn't functioning either. So I had to replace the motherboard and place a new cpu cooler :(
A local pc hardware store found the problem and fixed it for me, as I didn't had the hardware to locate the problem or fix it.

Got everything up and running again :)
