I have a Dell Dimension 4600 and the HD and CD drive are IDE conected.
The BIOS Drive Config show SATA capability. The very generic System Board diagram from Dell also shows serialATA connectors.
Would I be able to use SATA HD and burners with this setup? Since it shows "serialATA" and not SATA, are they the same? Are parallel IDE slower than SATA? This is a vintage 2003 XP system with a Pentium4 2.8GHz and have a Nevidia Grorce 6200 that I want to upgrade with a bigger HD and DVD burner. My graphics get bogged down with MP4 vids and I was wondering if it is worth while to dao these upgrades. It has been a reliable workhorse and would like to upgrade it for my grandkids to do everything but games.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, Serial ATA is the same as SATA.. So, your computer does support SATA Drives.
The video issues may be due to the installed RAM... the Dell Dimension 4600 specifications sheet say it had 512MB of DDR RAM so if you never upgraded it, that may be what bogs videos down, but you could still upgrade to a faster Graphics Card. You have a ATI Radeon 9000 PRO AGP 4x with 64MB DDR SDRAM Memory,
And you can still find AGP Card upgrades for as low as $25.00-$30.00, with 256MB of DDR2 memory and 128 Bit interface, and with 512MB memory for a few dollars more.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=E...
And if you want something better, AGP Cards come up to 1GB of DDR3 memory and 128 Bit interface.

Check the 2GB RAM upgrades on this same page.

Yes, I did upgrade my memory to 4 1GB sticks for 4GB (3.25GB useable and upgraded the video card to the Nvidia Gforce 6200 with 256MB already.
So if I understand, I need to buy SATA cable/connectors to plug into the drive from my mobo, but what about power? Do I need to do anything to the XP OS since the drives will no longer be IDE, but SATA?

Right, the HDD may include the SATA data cable and may also include the power adapter... from Molex to SATA. And if it doesn't include cables, they are sold at computer supply stores or online stores. Check the images for reference.
You can also replace the Power Supply for one with Molex and SATA power connectors.
What you need to do with Windows XP depends on the type of installation you plan to do:
A) If you make a cloned image, you don't need to reinstall programs or make any changes to Windows XP, what you do is transfer an identical copy of Win XP to the new HDD as follows.
1. Iinstall the new SATA HDD along with the IDE HDD, format the HDD in NTFS file system,
2. Clone your Windows XP from drive to drive with ImageDrive XML
3. Turn off the computer and remove the IDDE HDD
4. Access the BIOS and check the Disk Controller Setting is in IDE Mode
5. Boot to Windows XP
6. You can later install the SATA HDD drivers or leave the BIOS setting in IDE Mode.
B) If you have the Windows XP CD, you can do a clean installation. Remove the IDE HDD and install the SATA HDD, Check the BIOS Disk Controller setting and set it to IDE Mode if not already set. Boot to the XP CD, Partition the HDD, format it, install Windows XP.

thanks Chicano, that makes sense to me and will try this solution. I do have an Win XP disc, so will go that route. I've just finished running Dell Diagnostics so I'm up to date on testing the systems and updating drivers and BIOS.
After this, I'm getting over the fear factor and getting ready to build my first computer for general purpose internet use, bit torrent and very smooth videos. but no gaming. I've got about $500 to spend and perhaps you could recommend a CPU/APU motherboard combo. I'd like to reserve about $75 for a 120GB SSD and $75 for Win7 OS, so that leaves about $350 for everything else. From the investigations I've done, looks like you get a lot more for the $$$ with AMD than Intel if your not looking for top-of-the-line computing. Any suggestions?
Anyway, thanks for your help and I'll let you know how I do with the 4600.

$350 is a little tight... you would have to build a low budget system with components such as the AMD FM2 or AM1 Socket APUs that don't need a Graphics Card... Some of the lower powered FM2 APUs of around $50.00... a compatible motherboard can be found for low as $45.00. Motherboards for the AM1 Socket APUs are down to $37.00 and the lower performance APUs are about the same price.
To browse the Internet and play videos smoothly at full screen you don't need to spend much on top of the line components such as Intel or the AMD AM3+ Socket CPU And mobo, you can do that even with just about any of the recent AMD socket combos... I have a computer with AM3+ motherboard and a AM3 Athlon II x2 250 and I can do all this, and almost anything else except play modern games. My Athlon CPU is rated at 1759 on the Passmark Benchmarks, and the AMD AM1 Sempron 3850 APU with a speed of 1.3 Ghz with Radeon R3 is rated at 1733 on the Passmark Benchmarks, so it equals the speed of my Athlon II x2 250 3.0 Ghz and is priced at $42.99 which is half the price of the Athlon II x2 250 when new. That's the least expensive option for a APU/CPU+Mobo with a reasonable speed and you can do better with a little higher budget.
The following list includes Case, PSU, 4GB RAM, and DVD Burner, components you can use to build a Intel or AMD System. These are budget components that best approach your $350.00 budget.
The remaining components would be CPU, CPU Cooler (for AM3+ CPU), Motherboard, and Graphics Card.
PC Cases with average price of $45.00...
CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply... $49.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory... $47.99
ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS - OEM...$19.99
TOTAL $162.97
Your reserve for SSD and Windows $150.00
New Sub total is $312.00
That leaves $188.00 for the CPU/APU, motherboard and GPU if you make it one of the AM3+ CPUs of the FM2+ Athlons, otherwise you don't necessarily need a GPU with the AMD APUs be it FM2+ with a APU or AM1 with the new AMD APUs.
Socket AMD AM3+ Option:
AMD AM3+ Socket: You can use AM3+ motherboards with the FX-4000 series, the FX-6000 series or the FX-8000 series CPUs... prices range from $109.00 to $189.00...

I'd want to get the AM3+ build but it would go way overbudget, so sticking stricktly to your $288.00 budget, the AMD Socket FM2+ build would be my choice.

Chicano, another question please.
I just saw this add on the recommended mobo
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ite...
MSI A88XM-E35 Micro-ATX Motherboard - AMD Socket FM2/FM2+ A-Series/Athlon™ Processors, Max Dual Channel Ram DDR3-2133MHz, Max 32GB Memory, PCIe x16 - A88XM-E35
Item#: RSC-102324155 | Model#: A88XM-E35
on sale for $69.99
Is Tiger Direct a good place to shop?
I like this mobo as it has what I need in USB3.0 ports and HDMI
With the AMD A8-6600k APU from what I have read, it will do everything I need. Your choice was great!

If pcpartpicker.com has them in their merchants list, I'd suppose they are OK... but check buyer's comments about them. Check other merchants in the pcpartspicker list... you may find the motherboard at an even lower price.
Yeah... the A8-6600k looks like a good buy.. it's fast and unlocked so it can be easily overclocked to make it even faster if necessary but I doubt you will ever need to.

Joe... I just noticed I linked a AM3+ motherboard where I wanted to link a FM2+... I even lost the Model name because the MSI A88XM-E35 FM2+ has 2 RAM slots and I wanted to recommend one with 4 slots. The one I had in mind was priced at $113.00 but I somehow lost the link to it. Check these other motherboards in the same class with 4 RAM Slots, some have 2 PCIe slots, they are ATX with more expansion capabilities, have USB 3.0, etc. The MSI A88XM-E35 Micro-ATX is OK but these are better.. there is even another MSI just like it, the difference is the number of RAM slots and the form factor (ATX vs MATX).

This has the 4 RAM slots....everything else looks the same
How much difference does it make if I'm not gaming on RAM speed...1333, 1600, 1860
I notice the price can be quite different

No, that one is also a MATX form factor, I think it's this one... all these three motherboards are about the same with some differences as RAM slots, board size, and better quality capacitors ans small stuff that integrate the board. I would suggest a ATX which is full size with more expansion slots, for all types of expansion cards, capacity for more RAM for future use, or as they say "futureproofing"...
MSI A88X-G43 FM2+ / FM2 AMD A88X (Bolton D4) HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard (same as link above)

I selected all these (MSI A88X-G43 included) to have 4 ram slots, ATX form factor, To have the same A88X chipset, to have video ports, and 2 PCIe x1 slots with at least one PCIe x 16 3.0, and USB 3.0, IF you asked me, the ASUS A88X-PLUS FM2+ / FM2 AMD A88X (Bolton D4) HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard for $84.39 would be my first choice.

Great decision!... just one question.. Did you order 8 or 12 GBs of RAM... 3 X 4 is 12GB.. the price of $91.99 is to much for 8GB and to little for 12GB, so I can't tell which.
I have used Linux many Linux distros just to know them... I don't stay with any because there isn't much I can do with them and I like tweaking Windows to get to know it... but it's good for Internet browsing, watching vides, writing and mailing, making worksheets, etc. and with VM type software you can install Microsoft Office and do most of the stuff you can do on Windows.

You can download Windows 7 from the link below... If you install without a Product key and don't select activate online during setup you can have a 30 trial period during which you can save up for a product key code or buy a Windows 7 DVD. After 30 days, you must either enter a genuine Windows 7 product key or remove Windows 7.

Made an error...should be 2x4GB for a total of 8GB. I could have gotten it for $85, but not with free shipping that I got with Amazon, so I figured it was about a wash.
I found some win 7 OS with product key for about $57 on EBAY. Might try that as I use PayPal and they stand by the purchase.
I'm looking at a case...
19_FRI%20date:080814" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.frys.com/product/7867799?site=sa:adpages%20p...
at Frys...I live very close to them.
Other than the fact the case is pink...what do you think of this case for $39
Frys also has a Coolmax ATX V series 600W PS with 140mm fan. Since the case takes 120mm, could this still be used? It's only $20
also, just bought
Zalman CNPS5X Performa CPU cooler for $15 from Newegg

OK I hadn't considered the shipping... that makes a difference. The product key? The offer is good but I'd suggest not to dive into the offer tll you do some research... Ebay doesn't seem to enjoy good rep on software keys. Check some comments about it. I've also read some negative comments here, you have at least 30 days to think it over and keep searching for alternative offers.

The case looks of good quality and sturdy, coments on the brand are possitive, so besides the color is looks like a good buy.
Any ATX-12V PSU should fit the case no matter the fan size.. besides the 120mm fan refers to the case fan. $20.00 for a PSU? it's not a good idea to save on the PSU... better get a quality item for lasting service and motherboard protection... cheap PSUs can damage it. Look for one that's at least Bronze certified, that's at least $50.00 onwards from brands like Seasonic, Corsair, CoolerMaster, EVGA, XFX, OCZ, Antec, Enermax, Raidmax. Some may or not be available in your area, so check some articles on how to choose the right one for you that is available.
The cooler CPU cooler is a good buy. The newegg info doesn't mention FM2+ but AMD sockets use the same coolers so you shouldn't have a problem fitting it.
