Hey guys. I just upgraded my pc and here are my current specs @ monitor/ sound setup

fx4300 @4.1ghz w/hyper tx3 and noctua fan
ga78lmt-usb3
2gb hd7770
120gb pny xlr8 ssd
nzxt phantom 240
Coolermaster v750w gold power supply
8gb ddr3 1333mhz
bose qc3
jawbone jambox
1680x1050 dell slightly scratched @dead pixel

So yeah. For Christmas, should I get a new monitor or a new gpu. I just got my 7770 back in June, so r9 280x or 1080p 24" panel? I play bf3, bioshock inf, gta 4, skyrim, jc2, sleeping dogs, bl2, etc... and my fps is not too bad. The monitor is 7 y/o and if I don't upgrade the gpu for christmas, I will get the new gpu next June

well... i look at it this way. what's the point of having a better gpu if your monitor is still crapy and unsatisfying.

Getting a better GPU would be nice, but your monitor can't take advantage of it. A better monitor, on the other hand, will make your current gaming much more visually satisfying. If you're like most PC users, even hardcore gamers, you spend a lot more time looking at the monitor than actually playing games, so if you have to pick one, I'd go for the better monitor and add in the GPU when you can.

Yep, good point guys. I am pretty satisfied with my gpu for now. My power supply is crazy high end tier 1 and my case could fit a 400mm gpu, so might as well get a higher end gpu further down the line. Also, I consume alot of videos so new monitor will be better.

On a side note, should I upgrade amd or go intel? After my gpu in June my last upgrades to my pc will be mobo, cpu, ram. Still way to early to decide, but as of now 990fx 8350, and 8gb ddr3 1600 or i5 4690, some z97 board and also 8gb 1600?

intel, because of broadwell. AMD has not done much to their CPU's, and unless they come up with a cheap CPU that is just as powerful as Intel, if not more, before Broadwell, then go Intel. Unless your budget gets limited. In which case AMD's 8350(20) and a good 990fx motherboard from Asrock or Asus(personal favorites) and a noctua/hyper 212 evo. That said, you did mention you want a clc. You read the post with tiny's new cooler, right, the Zalman.

...The cooler is a Zalman cnps9900 MAX...

First impressions on the cooler were weird. It weighs a TON, but has an AWESOME backplate. It is also really small compared to the other top-end air coolers that cover the entire top of the motherboard. This made me start to doubt the "better than an h100i for $45 claims". Installation was easy and VERY simple for an aftermarket air cooler. I used the included resistor to retard the fan from 2000rpm max to 1700rpm max. I have a fan profile set up in the BIOS as well. It is not a very loud cooler at all, despite many claims.

As for performance, the first thing I did after calling MS to reactivate my OS through the automated service was run some stress tests. With 30 minute old paste (not cured AT ALL) the MAX temps I saw at 3.8ghz (MSI advanced turbo speed) were 49c. (after 10 mins of Prime95 and then after 10 mins of Intel Burn Test) I am VERY impressed with this cooler as it clearly packs a punch for its size. I 100% believe it really and truly is the $45 h100i killer the reviews make it out to be.

I know I have a "good" 3570k as I got to 4.2ghz stable without raising voltage on my other (MUCH lower end) board. I plan to get 4.5ghz EASY and shoot for 4.7ghz here in a bit. I can't wait for the paste to cure and see what this cooler can really do.

That is how good a good air cooler can be. If you want clc, go the whole hog and get a full on custom loop.

You actual question did get answered, but IMO, get a better monitor. Then downsize the res if you need to.
