Hi there,

A friend of mine is asking if his current corsair 1200i is able to supply the enough power to the following gpu configuration:

2x290x (Asus Direct CU II)
+
1x295x2 (Sapphire 295x2 OC edition)

I'm telling him that he will need more than 1200 watts for this kind of configuration because he will be having 4 gpu cores in total running.

Also, he is worried that because he is using a 1150 socket, the PCIe will run at 4x with 3 cards, 8x with 2 cards and 16x with one..

IMAO, I reckon he needs at least 1500 watts of psu power.

Thanks again.

That's a unique situation. PSU wise I'd recommend looking at the 290x x4 which lists a 1600 psu as recommended as the closest estimate. I believe that the 1200i as a valid concern for this specific scenario. Also, being this far on the high end spectrum a 2011 socket would most likely house wider band width lanes across the board (literally) without knowing specific/exact boards that we are comparing. What in the world is he trying to accomplish with this setup anyways?

His is just thinking of it's possible or not.

I have been telling him that having that kind f configuration is the best overkill of all.

I agree with you, the 1200i does not cut it for having these 3 cards altogether.

My advice to him is either sell on of the 290x and buy yourself a 295x2, so you can run a tri-fire configuration, by having the 3-fire configuration, he wont need to change his psu as the 1200i is capable of having 1x295x2 and 1x290x.

Maybe it's just me, but there seems to be a discrepancy in your totals. First you say 2 x 290 and 2 x 295oc edition and state he will have 4 gpu cores running. That would be four cards. Then you say 4x 3cards, 8x 2cards and 16x 1 card. That would be 6 cards or gpu cores. And I agree with jnewegger23, what in the hell is he trying to do? Two separate eyefinity displays with three monitors each or something? Hope he has like three high end cpus oc to like 6ghz. Heh. Just kidding.

I meant to write that he's got 2x290x at 8x PCIE lane speed.
If he add another card, the cards will be running at 4x PCIE Speed Lane which is very slow.
He would like to add 1x295(X2) top his rig.

My advice to him is to sell one the asus 290x and buy a 295X2,so he can run a tri-fire setup.

PSU wattage: Within the operatinal limits of the 1200i

@El Pelican I agree with your recommendation. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. What is the purpose still? It's nice to go overkill but there comes a point when you're just trying too hard when it makes no sense unless there's some specific need to fill which I can't even imagine. I don't mean to sound harsh but I'm actually quite intrigued and confused at the same time so any light to shed would be appreciated.

His is planning to play at 4k @ 60hz.
He can get 4k at 60hz while using the 290x xfire, but he is thinking of some kind of future proofing.

He was planning to get the 295x2 but he did not have had the money on time, so he went to get 1x290x and now he's got 2 of these cards.

Do you think that 2x290x will it be enough for playing at 4k?

at 30hz yes, at 60hz if you look at the data it will be challenging and not consistent but close depending on the game.
