I am looking to building a computer and I wanted to know if it was worth the money to upgrade from a fx-8350 to a i5-4690k. The fx-8350 costs $175 and the i5-4690k costs $230. Is it worth it?
Honestly I have a very strong bias in favor of intel but the fx-8350 seems to be a great value. If you are on a tight budget then that extra $55 could go towards a better gpu. Both builds will benefit from a better gpu and that would be more the difference maker in terms of gaming relative to these two chips. I know synthetically the amd benches better but the 4690k is just so revered in real world gaming most would agree that you do indeed get what you pay for; it's a great value in itself. I'd still pony up the extra money for the intel but that's my bias kicking in. I really just lack the experience with amd to help you pull the trigger in that direction but on paper I don't see why it would hurt.

Im currently running my fx 8320 @ 4.5GHz and I tell you what.. about 85% of the game im bottlenecked by my gpu (r9 280x).. the fx 8000 series are a pretty damn good chip for value.
Having already spent the money on AMD FX architecture, the improvement from switching to Core i5 will be small, while the expense is relatively high. Personally, I'd upgrade memory, storage, and GPU, and wait for the next generation of Intel CPUs to make the jump to the next generation socket, motherboard, etc.
