Buying additional RAM, which alternative is better? (2 x 2GB + 1x4 GB or 4 x 2GB)

I have a 5 years old PC which recently is lacking in performance due to shortage of memory.

Currently it uses 2 x 2GB DDR3 1.6GHZ RAM sticks (one at each channel).

I don't plan on spending much money, so please restrict the possibility to these two:

1. Buying a single 4GB 1.6GHZ RAM stick. cost ~60$.
Will allow me to increase the memory further by adding a fourth stick in the future.
Disadvantage? Maybe placing 4GB at one channel and 2xGB on the other? Not sure if that's all that bad.

2. Buying 2 x 2GB 1.6GHZ sticks. costs ~70$. Will allow me to put 4x2GB balanced RAM configuration.

Which of the two would you go for, and why?

(also, I'm not interested in hearing of where I can get a better deal, just a professional consideration - does 4x2GB works better than 1 x 4GB + 2 x 2GB).

Thanks !

If 5 years old and Intel, good chance it supports flex mode, where you are simply seeking an equal amount of DRAM in each channel - if so you would have dual channel with the 4 GB in slot 1 and the 2x2 in slots 3-4.....big thing here will be if the wticks will play together and mixing DRAM is a crapshoot - maybe it will and maybe it won't - if you try, give a shout if any problems, they can often be made to play nice with slight voltage/timing adjustments

#2. Because 1x4GB+2x2GB, means half your RAM is restricted to running in single channel mod, i.e., half the bandwidth. Secondly, unbalanced RAM configurations can seriously destabilize your system.
