Hello community,

I'm working on my first desktop PC build, and I'm a university student. My university offers free downloads of Windows 8, 8.1, etc. The catch is that to download the OS, you have to be logged on to my university's student website. As far as I know, I cannot get to the point of browsing the internet without an operating system, so I'm wondering how I can get this kind of copy of the OS on a build without having to buy an OS.

Thank you!

Solution
If it is an ISO image file, you will need to download it from another computer, then burn it to a disc or use the Windows 7 USB ISO tool to copy it to a flash drive.
We don't support any type of piracy on this site. You'll have to either download the OS legitimately though your university's student website or purchase the OS. If you don't currently have a working PC you should be able to log on to the university website using your login credentials with a friend's computer to get the download.

Forgive me if I was unclear. What I'm trying to do in no way involves piracy. It is completely legal, and I pay for the access to the download through my university's tuition.

Regarding burning it to a CD, would my build recognize the CD and be able to boot up with an OS on the CD without me previously installing an operating system?

There's no way around borrowing someone else's computer. Another way to do it is, using another person's PC, download and burn a copy of Linux, such as Ubuntu, then use it to boot up and install it on your new PC, just to get a working computer. Then using Linux, launch a web browser, log into the university website with your student account, download Windows to a USB or an external drive, then install it on your new PC. Let me know if you want a website link for downloading Ubuntu.
