Hello all,

seemingly simple problem here, just cant figure it out.

I want to remotely connect to a friends pc. He has multiple computers at his house, and I want to connect to a certain one. Obviously, no matter where he checks his external IP address from inside his home, it comes out the same as its the router that is given the address. So my question is how to i tell Windows Remote Connection which computer of his I want to connect to. His computers are not on a domain, so i cant use that, I have to use an IP address. I am really stuck here! Thanks to all who can help!

You would need some sort of vpn to connect to a specific computer on his at home network. You could also do some port forwarding to allow it without a vpn, but that can expose your computers to outside threats. You're best bet is to use 3rd party software like logmein or teamviewer to access that computer.

Here's a guide I found if you want to stick with using the built in Remote Desktop:

So basically either the compter needs to be on a named domain, or I need to do a VPN to connect to it. Everywhere on the microsoft website I looked there was no mention of this. I knew enough about remote connection to know it needed to be specific to the pc you are targeting. I am using teamviewer currently, but would like to connect without software.

For the port forwarding option, all I have to do is specify an port for that internal IP and I should be good right? When I connect I just add the :#### to the end of the external IP?

Thanks so much for the help!

Teamviewer allows you to setup a permanent connection type without the use of VPN software - you just click the icon, and connect (you have to utilize a username/password) - and you can configure several computers to be "always on" so you can connect.

Option #2 - Logmein Hamachi is a VPN software you install on computer #1 and computer #2. You create a virtual connection between the two computers and using the IP address of the VPN, you can connect with Windows Remote Desktop (provided that the computer you are connecting TO is a "professional" version (home versions do not have the ability to use Remote desktop to allow other computers to connect to them, but they can connect to one that is professional version).

Additional info I should have added. The info on the computer is for sales type access. So if my buddy is using it, I won't be able to access the files if I use teamviewer unless he stops working and vice versa. How can we both use the files on the PC at the same time?

Remote desktop won't allow you both to use the same computer at the same time....if it is only "sharing of files" (i.e. spreadsheets, documents, etc), using Hamachi will allow you to map network shares across the VPN and both use the files (the accessing program - i.e. MS-Word, MS-Excel must be installed on both machines).

If you use windows remote desktop, you need to change the port number that remote desktop listens on for each PC. You would then need to configure your router to port forward to each PC.

Of course, this won't enable simultaneous access.
