i have extra external antennas

they are from my old wireless router. i was wondering if there was any way to hook them up to my wireless adapter that is on my pc, so i could boost the signal strength

Only if your wireless adapter supports external antennas. What make/model adapter are you using?

If the connectors are compatible, then yes, you can use them. An antenna is an antenna.

well there is nothing to plug the antenna into... what im wondering is could i use some wire and unscrew my old antenna and put 3 peices of wire attached to the metal end... would i get 3x as good reception?

Try researching antenna theory to see just why that won't work the way you think it will.
