Hey guys. Everyone on this forum has been very helpful so far. But I need your help once more. I have a gateway dx4870-ub2c with intel hd graphics 2500. I have a new power supply in. Now I can't get my graphics card working. I have a msi radeon hd 7770. If I have the card in. I dont have anything on my screen. So I uninstalled the intel graphics. And tried installing the driver. Ati catalyst software. And the install keeps failing. I get this.

C:\program files\ATI\CIM\Reports\report.xml

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, created an association in the default programs control panel. I also have a dell lcd monitor with vga and dvi-d jacks. The graphics card only has dvi-i and hdmi. Can I run a dvi-d from monitor to graphics card? Just hoping I dont have multiple problems. And im just not doing something right in terms of running my graphics card

Sorry for this extremely simple question, but have you plugged you monitor into the video card outlets (either DVI or HDMI or Display port? and not into the connections on the motherboard?
Also, have you gone into the BIOS and disabled the integrated graphics or selected PCI-E graphics?

Im sorry I accidentally pushed u as solution. Anyways. I have a dvi-d running from my monitor to the card dvi-i port if that will work. And screen will still be blank if I have the card running. Im still confused on the error message. I disabled integrated graphics. And in bios I enabled the power on by pcie devices. Still nothing. Is my main problem the error when I try installing the driver?

Yes, DVI-D from graphics card to monitor will give you digital video. You shouldn't have to uninstall the Intel Graphics drivers, but you will have to disable the Intel Graphics and select your discrete video card. If you encounter problems, first try unintalling the Intel graphics drivers before any other troubleshooting.
Let us know what you did an how it is working. Best of luck.

What motherboard are you using and is it an older syle BIOS or an UEFI bios?

I have disabled the Intel Graphics. I will have to find out how to select the discrete graphics card. and If you could please tell me how to find out what motherboard i have I will tell you. I tried looking it up but couldnt find anything on which one it is

I guess my main problem now thats holding me back. is that I am unable to install the software for the Graphics Card. I continually get the failed message. I have my card plugged in and running. but still the same failed download message.

Gateway should have, on their website, a download of the service manual and description of parts in the PC. Though the easiest way to find out is open up the side panel(s) and find the name and model of the board; it will be printed on the board itself. Also, your owners manual MIGHT have instructions for working within the bios and changing over to discrete graphics.
I am off to a Dr. appointment, be gone about two hours. On my return will get into my UEFI bios and see exactly where you might make the choice for graphics, HOWEVER I do NOT have integrated graphics on either pc so it may not be in my UEFI's..
Gotta go, I'll get back on in a couple.

I am back. Have you accomplished anything?

I have looked in my BIOS and since I don't have any integrated graphics there is no choice offered.
But I did look up the manual and procedure for an ASUS H87 board, as that is an intel board, and found that the selection is made using the Advanced UEFI (There is Easy which is probably the stock setting on your pc). Once you have the UEFI opened in advanced mode you what to find 'System Agent Configuration". In there will be 'Graphics Configuration' , and the first choice would be Primary Display. It is probably set to 'auto' and if it is it should have switched to your video card as soon as you booted. Regardless, I would set it for PCIE.
I think you have to hit the "back" arrow at the top to get out of there; then click "Exit" and choose "Save and Exit".
See if it works now.

Just thought of another error often made, but pretty sure you would have caught it. Did you have a 6-pin PCIE power connector from your PSU and did you connect it to your card?
I went to Gateway's web site but was unable to find information aboutt the configuration of your pc, so also could not find any info about its power supply and what connectors it might have. Just for your information the recommended minimum power supply for the entire system using one HD 7770 is 430-500Watts with at least 19amp continuous power at 50C on the +12v rails. This takes into account the entire system, but it is the video card that will be the major power draw when you start playing games.

I will go into BIOS again and try what you suggested. also in the amd catalyst there is and option to uninstall amd software. should I uninstall it and then reinstall it? would that do anything?

Well, the section you need to find may not be listed under that name. Again, can you open up the PC and post the model and make of your mobo; even if it is marked Gateway, the exact manufacture and actual modell can be tracked down (usually)
If you try removing the drivers, try doing it in Safe Mode. I don't know how to get into that mode in W8.1 but you can look it up with Google.
I'm kinda scratching my head on this one.

I actually took it to the local computer guy today. I live in a very rural area so I figured id take it to the one guy who actually has a computer buisness. And hes fairly certain its a problem with the motherboard. Ill keep you posted when I hear the results. But thanks for your help

Sorry we couldn't help, but that was where I was going next, and why requested the exact model etc. Good luck, looking forward to the results from the shop.
