Should I consider it extremely unlikely that any XP-generation flatbed scanner or printer can be used on 64-bit Windows 7? Some have workarounds or compromise drivers for Win 7, but I haven't gotten any of them to work on my 64 bit system.....

Solution
Many Epson scanners are supported by third-party utilities.

Personally, if I need to use a device with no Win7/8 drivers, I simply boot my XP laptop or my old P4... I'm not going to waste $150 on a a modern toy-grade scanner when my old tank-ish Epson still works perfectly fine.

There are a limited number of TWAIN scanners that will work (if you get it enabled) in Win 7/8. There also may be a fancy WIA emulator but I wouldn't count on that.

Supposedly, TWAIN has a *Unified* API coming out for x86-84, Linux and Apple. Good luck with that.

VueScan at hamrick.com has reasonably priced drivers for running old scanners on Win 7
