Which is Dying? PSU or Video Card Fan?

So, my friend lent me his 5850 a while back when 465 was being RMAed. I got a 660 back from EVGA, and it's now my main card. Yesterday I thought "hey, I could mine altcoins with this thing", so I popped in the 5850, everything looked good.

So I fired up a miner, and whenever the fan hits 40% GPU temps start to skyrocket. I checked the GPU fan of the 5850, and yes it dies every time fan speed hits 40% (about 1.2k RPMs). What I'm not sure of if this is representative of a weak PSU or a faulty 5850.

I never have any problems with my 660 solo, BUT, my PSU is only 750 watts, even though it is a "quality" branded one (thermaltake) I suppose it could be a power issue.

I suppose I could test the situation with the 5850 solo, but this is a gaming rig not a miner, I'm not going to down-grade my GPU to for bitcoin mining.
