i have a wd elements hooked up to my pc now it has a button on the back that turns it off or on. my question is while my computer is off should i press this button so the light on the front turns off or just leave it on unless i want to disconnect it.

when my computer is on i feel it spinning but when its off i feel no spin so should i leave the little light thing on is that button only for disconnecting.

Your drives will spin down when your computer is off. I wouldn't worry about it. It's not going to save you any noticeable amount of money on your power bill.

The drives stop spinning on their own when you turn off your computer. You said so yourself. If you push the button to turn it off you won't make your hard drives last any longer.

If you push the button every time you shut down your computer, the first thing to break will probably be the button.
