Just wanted to find out can gaming memory work on a board with normal memory once the frequency is the same or will it not work together?

Solution

_______________

+1 - except, on the defaulting to to the lowest common speed, if the DRAM will play together it will initially go to the mobos default - from there it will all run at what you set it at, i.e. 2400 and 2133 won't default to 2133, alll will drop to the mobos default - normally 1066 or 1333
There are a lot of different kinds of memory, but there's actually no such thing as gaming memory. What kind of memory do you currently have?

It's possible to mix sets, as long as they're same kind (i.e. DDR3), but there's no guarantee it's going to work well. If they work together at all, your speed will default to the lowest common speed. If you want to upgrade, it's better to buy a complete set if you can.

My bad - inexact statement. But once you bump it from the mobo's default, isn't the max speed (using the 2400/2133 example) going to be 2133 and whatever the loosest timings are? Or maybe whatever final speed and timings the 2133 will accept on OC?

All depends on what you can set them too, it's up to you and the capabilities of the DRAM, If you have good sticks, say a pair of 2133/9 and a pair of 2400/10, you quite possibly can run all at 2400 (I've done this many times, you often need a change or two to the DRAM and MC voltage, also may need to go into the Advanced/secondary timings - as mentioned with good sticks can often OC the lower rated ones, or just drop the higher freq down to the lower - can do some interesting things, I've mixed 1600 and 2133 sets at 1866 even

You are bad for my nice comfortable assumptions. Bad for my wallet, too - every time we have an exchange, I have to go buy different DRAM to try it for myself.

Sorry :) DRAM is very misunderstood and lots of myths still float around and is even perpetuated by the manufacturers, many advertise as an exampla DRAM as 'gaming' when in fact it is poor performance wise, i.e. 1600 sticks with a high CL or requiring high voltage like 1.65 which actually can be indicative of weak sticks
