My current pc is 5 years old and getting to the point where it is unable to play current games. It was my first build and had poor ventilation and was on a strict budget. Since then, I have built three other pcs for other people. I recently got paid nicely for a website I wrote for a neighbor and would like to build a new gaming rig.

So far, these are the parts I have picked out:

ASRock Z97 Extreme4 - $143.99
http://goo.gl/YCJZJs

Intel Core-i7-4790K - $339.99
http://goo.gl/tTegRw

A-Data XPG V2 8GB DDR3 1866 - $84.99
http://goo.gl/03vDit

Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB SSD - $119.99
http://goo.gl/OtqenB

Western Digital Red 3TB - $124.99
http://goo.gl/Fd7wLZ

EVGA GeForce GTX 660 - $229.99
http://goo.gl/UeaFJh

Case/Fan stuff:

NZXT Source 530 - $89.99
http://goo.gl/jDK5NV

Cooler Master 120mm Sleeve Fan 4-pack - $16.99
http://goo.gl/1WSb7Q

4 - Zalman F3 FDB 120mm Fluid-Bearing Fan - $47.99
http://goo.gl/e89s13
(These would be horizontal, which I read was bad for sleeve fans, also they were roughly the same price as ball-bearing fans)

NZXT Sentry 3 Fan Controller - $34.99
http://goo.gl/qJizqC

3 Fan Splitters - $8.97
http://goo.gl/TVojFR
(Fan controller only has support for 5 fans)

How about a Rosewill Capstone 750W ($99.99)for PSU?
http://goo.gl/xCGiP7

Along with a case, psu, 8 fans, and a fan controller this comes out to $1,302. What do you think? Any way to bring down the price without diminishing performance would be appreciated.

If this is pretty much just a gaming pc without video editing or possibly streaming there are a lot of changes to make.\

1.) dont get the i7 get the i5 4690k

2.) get a cpu cooler, if you dont want to spend a lot get the 212 evo

3.) get different RAM, you can get better RAM for cheaper like a gskill ripjaws

4.) thats a lot of storage, it might not save a ton of money but unless you really need all that get like a 1Tb WD blue

5.) get a 770 or 280x, they will be way better than a 660. If you get a WD blue 1TB you could probably even get a 290

Specifics on your case and psu would be helpful

unless you primarily play Starcraft II & the few other games that takes advantage of the i7, it's poorly chosen. get an i5-4690K, and a much better GPU. $230 for a 660 is not a good deal. in that price range you could get a GTX760 or an R9 280 for a much better performance. also you need a power supply. use this for consultation, preferably no lower than a tier 2; http://eggxpert.com/eggxpert/computer_hardware/f/135081...

I do some video editing here and there (snowboarding), and a good bit of photoshop. Forgot to mention that above. I'll look into CPU coolers and the other graphics cards. The one I had seemed a little sketchy, but I picked it based off of newegg reviews.

$1000-$1200 preferably, but I'm pretty flexible.

okay, and the photoshop stuff, that's a hobby right? You don't earn a living from it? And do i need to include the fans and fan controller in the price?

1) As some of the others have stated, go with the i5 4690K. The price difference is pretty high and you aren't getting much for performance increase unless you are do multi core instensive stuff. I just recently rebuilt my PC and to save some money went this the 4690k and it is more than enough for gaming.

2) like the others mentioned, use that savings for a better graphics card. 770 or a 280x will get you good performance in just about anything you want to throw at it gaming wise.

3) I personally would pass on the Samsung ssd. With any SSD your system will be fast. I have a PNY for my boot drive now, and a crucial and adata that i use to install all my games through Steam/Origin. You could get a 256 for the same price or less than that Samsung and have more space for your games and other programs. I assure you, that 128 will fill up fast once you start installing games.

4) You may not need the 3tb red. I have a couple 1tb WD blacks that are solid and trustworthy drives. Maybe knock that down to a 2tb red or black and save a few bucks. Personally I don't suggest getting a blue. I have't had good luck with them in the past.

5) CPU cooler is a must. A lot of people swear by the Hyper 212 evo cooler. Its a good choice. I just put a Corsair h100i AIO liquid cooler on my 4690k and mine Idles around 30c and load temp at stock speeds is in the high 40s/low 50c range. Your case has to have room to accomodate the radiator and fans though.

6) Speaking of cases, you should really update it with a case you want to use.

7) 8 Fans? Thats a little excessive. I realize your last one wasn't vented well but a couple or a few fans in the 120/140mm range should be sufficient to push/pull enough air through your case to keep things cool. 2 in front maybe, one in the rear and one on the side(or top). This also Depends on your CPU cooler as well.
