Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've just built my new PC with Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 motherboard and AMD FX 8350 CPU.

I'm having a little trouble installing Windows 7 at the minute.
The setup asks for a driver and no matter which I choose, I get the following:
AfvGid4.jpg

I've tried using the AHCI / RAID driver from the motherboard disc and also downloaded the drivers from the ASUS website. No luck.

I have 3 drives currently.
- 128GB SSD - Linux. Currently unplugged to prevent Windows overwriting GRUB.
- 1TB HDD. 300GB Windows partition / 700GB XFS Linux partition.
- 2TB HDD NTFS storage

All drives are plugged into the white SATA ports on the motherboard.

From within Linux, I can see all my drives without issues.

I'm using Windows 7 Pro SP1 on USB stick
And I have a genuine Microsoft Windows 7 Pro disc,

Any help appreciated,

It's been suggested I format the 1TB drive and unplug the 2TB drive. I've never need to do this before on any install?

Good catch on the AHCI driver; it seems they decided to leave off the "Windows 7" part of the name when moving from the 2012/11/19 release to the 2013/12/17 release, even though that AHCI driver wasn't even upgraded (same version number).

I feel for you, this definitely sounds like one of those maddening problems, the kind that just don't seem to make sense. I hope your new efforts bear fruit, and they finally get the issue sorted out.

I'm not seeing any white ports listed on the ASUS website for that board; do you mean the greyish ports (of which there are 2)? If you do have your two HDDs in the greyish ports, try them out in the brown ports and see if that helps.

The brown ports are controlled by the chipset, while the greyish ones are controlled by an add in controller (add in controllers sometimes need a particular driver installed before they function properly). Not certain it'll help, but it's certainly worth a try if you haven't tried it already.

Thanks Damn_Rookie,

Just plugged all 3 into the brown SATA ports but still the same issue, nothing detected when I choose the AMD AHCI driver.

Would SecureBoot have any effect with Windows 7? I've not configured it however I've seen it when flicking through the bios.

Hmm, it's a strange one. I'm surprised it's asking you for a driver. Actually, looking on ASUS's site, there are no AHCI drivers for anything after Windows Vista, which makes sense as you really shouldn't need any drivers on Windows 7 or 8 or 8.1 for a normal AHCI setup.

I'd agree with whoever suggested you should remove the 2 TB drive when you try and install Windows, just as a routine step. Many sources that I've read suggest that Windows 7 at least has a habit of sneaking some files into every drive currently attached during installation, which would cause issues if you ever removed the 2 TB drive. So best to play it safe and just have a single drive in place during installation to avoid any issues down the line.

Give it a try it with just the 1 TB drive attached, and see if it still demands a driver from you.

Hey , home from work now and pulling my hair out.

The AHCI drivers are listed here for XP, Vista, 7 and 8
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_990FX_R20/HelpDesk_Download/

128GB SSD and 2TB drive have been removed.

Windows setup still can't find any drives.

Changed the SATA mode to RAID and Windows setup again could not find any drives.
Same thing when changed to IDE mode.

I've just formatted the 1TB disk with GPT partition table and I've changed SecureBoot to "OtherOS"
Also making a new UEFI GPT bootable 7 SP1 USB :)

I was having the same problem, but I have a fix for you. After you get install to see the raid array, it f**ks up on updating the boot sector, but I've got a work around for that too.

First "slipstream" the raid driver included in AMD's chipset driver pack 14.12 into windows 7 install image and the boot image using NTLite. Windows install will now see the raid array, however you will need to partition it, and update the boot sector manually. This can be done in the "repair my computer" section in the install. Open command prompt, and partition the raid array using diskpart (make sure you set the partition as active, and assign it a drive letter "ASSIGN"); then change to the windows install disc drive letter and cd into "boot" folder, there you will find a exe called bootsect.exe, use the command "bootsect /nt:60 <drive letter of raid array>:" After updating the boot sector just restart the computer and boot into install again, window install should complete successfully now (at least it did for me).

This worked for me. Good Luck.

P.S. After "slipsteaming" and getting windows to recognize the raid array. I basically just followed this guide http://www.intowindows.com/bootable-usb/ it is for making a bootable usb, but the steps are the same for setting-up the raid array so windows install won't fail. Only difference is you might want to do a quick format instead of a full format as that will be a lot quicker. If you don't know how to do that, when you get to the format command in the instruction type "HELP FORMAT" and it will print to screen a list of commands and there description.

System specs.
Mother Board: ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0
CPU: AMD FX-8150 @ 4.2 Ghz
RAM: Kingston HyperX Beast 32 GB Kit 2133MHz DDR3
Power supply: Corsair RM Series 750 Watt
Video Card/s: Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition (master) Crossfired with Powercooler PowerColor HD 7850 (slave)
Hard Drives: Two 1 TB hard drives in Raid 0 array. + a couple of external drives.
Wifi card: ASUS PCE-AC68

I'm trying to spread the word on this fix, because before I figured out the work around I could not find any good solutions google searching the problem!

P.S.S. The driver you want from AMD can be found (after extracting) in this sub-folder AMD\AMD-Catalyst-Omega-14.12-SB-SATA-AHCI-Win8.1-Win7\Packages\Drivers\SBDrv\SB8xx\RAID\W764A .

Have experienced the same issue and the trick for me was to plug the Windows 7 USB stick in a USB port in the back of the computer (on-board port), instead of using the front USB port on the computer case.

I had the same problem. I zero'd the first million sectors and last million of the drive and switched the cd drive from the secondary sata controller to the same one the install drive was on. It popped up without issue once i did this.

your in the usb 3.0 port, it requires drivers to load, win doesn't see anything except the ram drive, just fixed mine was getting request for driver installing to ssd, removed everything and looked everywhere, I found it myself, was using usb dvd to install from, it was in 30 not 20 usbs, switched and all is right in the world.
