green screen when trying to watch videos on windows 8

Solution
Solutions I read may or may not fix problem but they will degrade your browsing experience, perhaps dramatically or perhaps dramatically later.
Try changing file association, search for file association with windows search tools, it is a control panel item.
Which program to associate with .SWF or in English, Flash? I prefer VLC, find this time using Google or Bing. Download VLC and install. Choose advanced installation (Do this with EVERY INSTALL) and read each screen carefully, the Dark Side is trying to get you install, umm, how do I say it, crap. Only install VLC and make sure you didn't inadvertently choose to download something other than VLC, again re carefully and don't just naively click accept. Once installed make .SWF file...

Here is link to VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html.

DON'T turn off hardware acceleration in any program unless you enjoy slower graphics and videos. It is a work-around not a fix.

This was a new problem for me today. I spent almost an hour searching for a solution. Logged into Facebook on Mozilla instead of IE, and I didn't have the problem there. Just as I was about to post that I still had to find the IE solution, I read more on this site. garyganu had the answer. Control panel - Internet options - advanced tab and reset it. Just logged in to FB in IE, and the videos are fine.

I downloaded DIVX (includes web player) and after closing and re-opening my browser everything was good.

Only point to mention is during install when you get the page that give you a "express" or "custom" install selection, click custom and then untick 'opera browser' to stop it downloading that along side if you dont want it

Hardware acceleration is a feature in Internet Explorer 9 and later versions that lets Internet Explorer move all graphics and text rendering from the CPU to the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). In some cases, you have to enable or disable hardware acceleration to check for hardware or software compatibility issues with viewing certain Internet websites, such as websites that contain streaming or full-screen video.

To fix this; Just go to Internet options, click on advanced and enable Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering check box. Click apply & restart the PC. This worked for me.

My wife's laptop (HP Pavilion with AMD A8-6410 APU processor with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics) had this problem and really drove her crazy. We tried every fix we read about online and often, as others have reported, the problem would go away for a bit but then always quickly returned. We had the problem with Internet Explorer 11 and also with Google Chrome.

Luckily it was still under warranty and so I finally got around to calling HP Support, not expecting much help really. The rep took remote control of the laptop, uninstalled the display driver and then rebooted, which reinstalled the same driver. Then she went to the AMD website, used the "auto-detect" feature there and downloaded and installed an updated driver. (In light of this second step, I'm unclear if the first step of uninstalling and reinstalling the original driver was necessary).

It's only been 24 hours but so far no more green screen. My wife has been watching lots of videos to put it to the test, and in the past, the green screen would've reappeared by now. So, fingers crossed and I hope this helps someone else.

Andrew

Update: It's now been 10 days and not a single green screen! This fix seems to have done the trick for us.
