Hey all.

So my WD My Book has been on the fritz lately and after several attempts to fix it, I have come to the conclusion that I need to replace my 3 platter head with another. This My Book is about 2–4 years old now, so it is been a little hard finding a proper platter online. Can anyone tell me where I can find a 3 platter head for my HD? It's a WD20EARX with a 64MB cache.

If the heads are worn, the platters are likely damaged as well and would ruin your new heads in fairly short order - assuming all the dust and probable alignment errors in your repair does not kill them in even shorter order. Even if your DIY fix is successful and the platters are still intact, the drive probably won't last more than a few more hours unless you have the tools and expertise to put everything back together at factory-new specs.

If your drive is still working well enough to get your data out of it, make backups immediately and buy a whole new drive. Much simpler and safer that way.

The thing is, my HD just shows up as Local Disk (G:) on my PC.

Steve, I'm afraid it's now three for three. Replacing heads requires clean rooms, much training, and specialized equipment. Definitely not for the do-it-yourselfer. Invalid's solution is the best chance you have unless you either have access to said equipment or are willing to spend a few grand to have it done.

It just shows up as that and doesn't show me anything like the data used/available. And every time click on it, I get a white screen.

Does Windows' disk manager show it as something usable at all?

My failed HDDs simply quit showing up at all... I power them up, hear them spin up and go through their built-in self-test routine - or whatever part of it they can get through with what still works - and that is it.

@invaliderror, I don't think it showed up on the disk manager, but it did show up on My Computer.

Also ignore the fact I labeled your response as the best solution, I did that by accident lol.

I've pulled that - SS
