I just got a new 4790k, the temperature is around 47-50c, at 1 - 2% load. Is this too high? I'm using stock cooler.

Update : I reapplied thermal paste twice and made sure the cooler is secure. The temperature is still the same. The CPU throttles within seconds after starting prime95. Anybody else have temperatures like this for 4790k?

Motherboard temperature has very little effect on processor temperatures. At 27C ambient you should idle in the mid-30's. Are you testing with an open case? Are all your BIOS settings at stock / default / auto values? Z97 motherboards tend to set voltages much higher than necessary. You might want to try manually configuring Vcore.

Use Core Temp or Real Temp to monitor your Core temperatures. Use Prime95 version 26.6 - http://windows-downloads-center.blogspot.com/2011/04/prime95-266.html

Room temperature is around 27 C. I just got a 120mm case fan to make sure there is good airflow within the case. I reapplied thermal paste twice and made sure the stock cooler is secured proplery. Mobo temperature is around 35 C, so the CPU temperature when it's idling should be around there too right?
