Hi all.

I overlocked my FX 8350 to 4,5 GHZ with air cooling using a noctua D14
So, running a prime test to see if the system is stable.
Also having CPU-z open to check the CPU speeds. As i watched the speeds I saw it drop to
1396Mhz while in bios i turned off AMD cool n quiet and also thermal throtling is disabled.

What can cause this drop?
My mother board is an ASROCK 970 Extreme 4 with P2.60 bios.

What do the CPU temperatures look like?

From what i can see you have a 4+1 power phase MB, the MB might not be the best to OC your FX - 8350, I had in the past GA-970A-DS3P with 4+1 power regulators and i couldn`t get any stable OC on that MB, now using a 8+1 power MB i can OC my FX all i want given that my cooling can keep up.

Well, computer is working stable and running fine so far.
Only crazy thing is the drops in speed of MHZ as in bios it should stay fixed @ the oc'ed clockspeed.

Running @ 1.41 for your info.

This is a screenshots after 1 hour of Prime95 with the temperatures. But as i said the clockspeed sometime still drops so maybe that is the reason why it still stays cool.

@edit:

The crazy thing is, when i stop the Prime95 test. The CPU speed then remains @ 4,5 GHZ without drops.

It is the boards VRM's that force throttle when under high CPU load which prime 95 gives, in normal use the load is not near as much.

So you say it's normal that the VRM does that? Also with an other motherboard i will have this you mean?

It is a common issue with all boards having 4+1 power phases (some will even melt the VRM's). Good quality 990FX boards do not have that issue. Example http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-990fxki...
There really are only 3 970 boards suitable for 8core with reasonable price;
Asus M5A97 R2.0
Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P
MSI 970 GAMING
All have either 8+2 or 6+2 power phases.
