New to Tom's Hardware - been looking into building a gaming PC these past few months. However I'm getting a little overwhelmed with all my choices and I'm looking for some advice.

Was wondering if anyone would be able to help me put together something using the parts I've chosen so far:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
EVGA GeForce GTX 770 4GB Dual Superclocked ACX Video Card
Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S 55.0 CFM CPU Cooler

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions for memory, storage, a roomy case, power supply, and what I've chosen so far. I'm looking to keep the budget around 1,300, but I've got room to go a little above if needed. The primary use of this build is going to be for gaming, recording, etc. I already have an OS, and peripherals aren't included in this budget. I'm pretty new to the concept of building from scratch so (blunt, honest) input at all on what I should get and what I've chosen so far is really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I suggest an r9 290x GPU.

1TB WD Caviar Blue HDD.

Corsair Vengeance 1x8GB or 2x4GB

Antec V1 case

650W PSU (probably Seasonic)

If have some money left try getting a Samsung evo 840 120GB SSD

MB - Changed to a Z97 offering.
MEM - The Vengeance modules are fine, but the tall heat spreaders aren't needed. The modules below are low latency. Always install modules in pairs to take advantage of the dual memory controllers.
HD - The Blue lags behind the Seagate on performance. Fine and all, but the Seagate is a better purchase.
SSD - The 840 EVO is a fine choice as is the MX100.

Assuming the OP actually has the peripherals I say that's the same stuff I would have chosen LOL!

Ok, so this has a processor that runs cooler (No performance difference though). A better cooler, better graphics card, better power supply, a case that I prefer (Cases are a personal choice, so get a case you like as long as it has good airflow).

Considering he wants to record he dodges the need for third party software or a video capture card by getting an Nvidia card which already includes Shadowplay it's the reason the OP chose the 770 in the first place! I would have to say the rig sadams04 had the right idea filling in the blanks not putting opinions where the OP already made a choice.

Granted the 290 is a fantastic card it creates a bigger expenese or inconvenience for the OP later if he then needs an extra monitor and software/device to record and manage it all. I'm not saying the list you tossed together is not good btw I would personally toss a rig like that myself, so I don't mean to talk down. I just think the OPs requirements make it a pretty straight forward choice hence the reason for picking the Nvidia card.

Where with shadow play it's all built-in and a part of what Nvidia offers. Perhaps if AMD had already released their version of a recording option then switching between cards wouldn't be a problem in this scenario. I would have to say the 770 is the right choice considering you've maxed his budget and he would still need more to do the recording part and that can potentially cost him money as well.

Thanks so much, definitely will look into this. Looks really nice. Overall, would you guys reckon this is a pretty solid build for my intended purposes?

It is a solid build, but I prefer mine as I have reasons for the parts I chose which I listed under the build. Just swap out the r9 290 if you still want a gtx 770, even though I suggest you have a look at OBS which you can use with the r9 290.

Oh sweet I wonder when they plan to finally release GVR. Also not to steal the OPs thunder just out of curiosity is OBS already available. Because that being the OP could go either route then?

It is but if OBS is already released which is seems so according to Ytyoussef you might actually think of considering the R9 290. But it's up to you in the end.
