Hi,
I am trying to build a PC for myself. I have HP Pavilion Slimline s3600t PC and it has started to give me problems. (likely both power supply and BIOS). I am thinking of re-using the hard drive (which I changed 2 years ago-Seagate 7200rpm 1.5T) as well as the DVD writer. My needs are web browsing, office, powerpoint and infrequent video editing. I was thinking of mid to mini tower but have hard time figuring out a CPU/motherboard. I would like to keep my budget less than 300-400 since I have storage/dvd/monitor already. Thanks

You will need a new copy of Windows as well. You are not gaming, it seems, so a dedicated graphics card isn't necessary either. Quick sync can be used for your video editing.

I do not game anymore and still have a GPU for video rendering acceleration and OpenCL operations.

Quick sync can handle video editing. That is its purpose.

Not possible with given budget, unless they don't need windows. OP, if you do not need windows, then an i5 4460 would be my pick.

Which is why I said, in my last post, to go with the i5 if they don't need Windows. :p

I have Win 7 right now on my desktop. Do you think I can use my current copy of Windows. Do you think if I burn the "recovery" partition from my hard drive, I will be able to load the Win on new PC? VS since I am using the same hard drive, it should be loaded anyways??

Theoretically if you place the hard disk in the new motherboard, and having the same HDD controller mode in BIOS (AHCI or IDE), it SHOULD boot up without problems. The worst problem would be the license being revoked, but I can help via PM if you want.

THe Recovery option is good to try too.

I just found my recovery disks. Will give it a try as well.

In the following package..how about if I change the processor to FX 8320? If I do, how necessary is the video card with that?

CPU: AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor ($101.91 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($74.99 @ Newegg)

If you are not gaming, either use a iGPU or a cheap HD 6450. Not gaming also means single threaded performance is less important.

Ehm, I still think you will be better with a FX 4300. Will you do something more intensive than office jobs and multimedia? If yes, look at the hexacores and octocores. Try a 4300 With a SSD, this will give you a good performance.

And if I go with i5 4460, then does rest of the configuration still hold right? and how about the case..DIYPC M89-R Black/Red USB 3.0 Micro-ATX Mini Tower Gaming Computer Case with Dual Red Fans (1 x 120mm LED x Front, 1 x 80mm x Rear) ?

Motherboard: ASRock H81M-DGS R2.0 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($51.38 @ Newegg)
Memory: Kingston 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($69.99 @ Amazon)

Thanks

If you go that way, get a Asrock H81M-HDS because it haves a HDMI port which will let you connect to a TV and output audio and video too.

Guys,
Sorry, I have been reading more and more about all the components....From what I understand, I rather make a rock-solid system which I can upgrade at a later date whenever I need it. So, I have increased my budget to b/w 700-800 considering I donot need optical drive/storage/operating system.
I think I should go with i7. Please let me know which components would work best? Will I need separate video card and cooler too or maybe in future

I came up with this build, feel free to recommend a different component in this..
Intel Core i7-4770 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
Gigabyte GA-H97N-WIFI Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard
Corsair 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ( Should i rather buy 8GB x1 for this for future upgrade)
Rosewill Line-M MicroATX Mini Tower Case
Antec 450W ATX Power Supply

Thanks again

Skip the 4770 and go for the Core i7-4790. Why? Because it haves better thermals than the 4770 and the price should be near identical. You get vPro and Virtualization for free compared to the 4770 too.

Otherwise everything seems in order... but I do not recognize that PSU. Someone here with PSU experience might tell you.

* The thermals are important because since Sandy Bridge, Intel skipped soldering their CPUs and now they use crappy gay paste inside the chip, between the metallic IHS and the die, therefore making worse contact. Theoretically, this has been fixed in the 4790 and 4790K.

Corsair 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ( Should i rather buy 8GB x1 for this for future upgrade)

what do you mean..premium?
Also, which video card would work for the Xeon E3 if I were to buy that. I am going to cancel the Xeon order in the meantime and re-think about CPU..maybe go with same i7 vs xeon +GPU...

Nah... only that usually mini itx boards are more expensive than a micro atx counterpart while having the same or less features.

Alright. Back on track with same stuff.... Please dont make me miss any more heartbeats..... Do you think it is worth looking into separate cooler with all that configuration... Or should I see how it goes for next few months!

Go ahead for the moment. As the Xeon is a cool chip, it will suffice with the stock radiator.
