I have Dell Vostro laptop with 2nd gen i5. The 500 gb hard drive is divided into 4 partitions (C: D: E: H: ). It was installed with windows 8.1 before everything went bad.

I was trying to make it dual boot with Windows 8 and Ubuntu on C: & E: respectively. Due to some errors and several attempts i am finally left with Ubuntu installed on C: with rest of 3 partitions showing in Ubuntu disk utility as single partition and that too of size 427 GB (C: is of 73 GB) which is not possible. In that single partition i am able to see only my D: data. E: is empty but H: data is missing and it is important data (no, i don't have backup).

Also windows setup has been unable to detect hard disk after i tried to install Ubuntu first time on E:

Is there any way to get my actual partition structure back so that i can get data on D: and H: back? (I think formatting whole drive will make my system ok but using formatting and recovery is the very last option).

Please help.
Thanks in Advance

Try Boot-Repair. I hope it works for your case.

No no no. You should've just said c: has 200gb left on it (or however much you had on it) make about 10-20 gb your ubuntu / drive and leave it at that initially especially for laptops. I am not a master linux user but I do know alot about partitions.
Use your restore disk get win 8 back on there and go buy yourself a 128gb flash drive along with a dual layer dvd or Blu Ray disk and back that $ hit up.
You know what I did to my system before I installed linux? Unplug my 3 HD'S that have important data on it, format my 256gb ssd and partition it at 20gb for the / drive than installed Windows 8 on the rest of the free space.
Since this is a laptop you cant unplug drives that easily but you can run the risk of destruction of the partition tables even in the windows installer. I had a server that happened to back in the 2003 server days killed the raid controller. Luckily had a backup.
Good luck.
