Doing a build around an i5_4690k on an ASRock z97 Extreme 4. Saw two memory kits from G.Skill for basically the same price but one is 1600 with CAS of 9 and the other is 1866 with CAS of 8. Is there any reason I shouldn't get the 1866?

if the chip and the board will run it 24-7 stable then theres no issue all you can do is stick it in and fire it up and see

Let's assume i'm a noob, which i am, will that chip/board combo run it 24-7 stable?

you don't know . memory can be finicky and it can come down to luck of the draw. I got memory that worked well on one set up but did not do so well on another and were all on there memory list so why did it not work so well on one but not the other?? intel cpu is rated for 1600 so memory over that is a overclock so .... either it will run fine or it won't or run fine some where in between but if its been tested on the boards list is should be ok but is the board you get as good as the test board is the chip you get a good binned chip or will it have a weak memory controller ?? as I said it can come down to luck of the draw

if money is not an issue, and just between the 2, go for CL-8. theoretically, it's faster...

So, worst case scenario, the 1866 will dip to 1600 or it will get worse or not work at all? I only ask because they are the same price and 1866 has lower CAS. I'm juggling here between getting the 1600 and no hassles or 1866 and better performance but possible issues....

it will default to 1600 and then you got to set it up for the higher speeds like setting its xpm profile

yes, that's right. in order to get it to 1866, you definitely have to set the xmp profile. ;)

but if it don't take the xpm then you got to down clock it manually to a point to where it will boot stable

with that board, its unlikely that it won't take the xmp profile.
