While playing World of Warcraft on ultra settings, my cpu temp reached 72*c (using core temp). Idle its 40*c. Not sure if this is high, but i can feel heat coming out the front of my case. I've installed a rear exchaust fan and a intake fan on the side of the case to help cool the cpu and gpu.

I'm using

i7-4790 cpu @3.6ghz
geforce GTX 770
Gigabyte GA-H81M-H motherboard

That's not dangerous, but it would be better for the CPU if you can keep it at cooler temps, say 30-35C at idle and 60-65C under load. (These are just goals/approximations - every chip will have a different temperature profile.)

I'm guessing you are using the stock CPU cooler. At the link below are two good, inexpensive aftermarket coolers that will do a much better job the the stock one. The TX3 doesn't require a backplate, so you can just pop it right in. The Hyper 212 is bigger and is a little more involved for installation, but does a very good job. Just make sure to closely follow the thermal paste application instructions that are included with the coolers...

From my personal Intel experience, the Intel stock coolers are crap. Too tiny radiator. These buddies are right, you will gain alot buy getting a cheap after market cooler.

About the degrees, 72º at load is not usually dangerous in Intel, but it is on AMD.
