I'm going to be running Two Intel Xeon E5-2687W Sandy Bridge with 3.1GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost)
LGA 2011 Socket.

I've posted fourms about building +6+8+10,000 dollar builds, and when deciding on parts the industry is always changing, so i've withheld alot for research purposes and also alot of the planning my company Sleepyhead Media is doing atm is not short term or at all quick decision making. <--- just a quick disclaimer lol.

anyway! as i was saying, I'm going to be running Two Intel Xeon E5-2687W Sandy Bridge with

3.1GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost)

LGA 2011 Socket.

I would like to over clock the boost clock to 4GHz, and the base to possibly 3.5GHz or just Always idle at 3.8GHz.

A motherboard avalible now that can take a little overclocking, not much! i might even just squeeze 0.3 or 0.4 GHz out of the CPU's.
A motherboard that can handle two Titan Black's in SLI? so SLIready i suppose.

''the overclocking of the CPU is not entirely important, but it would be nice''

i'm custom watercooling both CPU's, just air for the GPU though.

my first look at a motherboard was the SR-X, but i called EVGA and they said it was nolonger in production..

my second look was an ASUS, because i was directed to teh next best thing by my personal prefrence and many fourms on the Dual Xeon Subject: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681...

and my third look was this morning because i did'nt much like the review on the ASUS, this board seems alot more solid.. anyone have experience with it?: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681...

by all means! i'm asking for some help! anyone know of a motherboard? or has experience with a motherboard, or any of the motherboards stated above that can help with this important decision?

Thank You!

TYAN has been making dual, and quad, CPU boards forever. ASUS is one of the leading manufacturer's of PCBs in the world.

The ASUS has a lot more PCIe 16x slots, so you are planning for a lot of GPUs or other 16x cards that could be useful. Looks like it has a lot more robust VRMs for the CPUs as well. I also like that the ATX connectors are closer together, should make for easier cable management. Also has more SATA connectors.

I can't see any advantage the TYAN has, seems to be more utilitarian.

For those OCD types out there, don't look at the offset ram slots.

If you can hold out a little longer you can look at Haswell-E and X99 boards with DDR4.

An alternative:

Here at work we use Dell T7610 computers. Dual LGA 2011 with 128GB of ECC and a single Quadro K5000 (we offer more for those that need it, including Teslas) Includes a 1300W power supply, and quite efficient air coolers.

I would have to double check, but we run some with a pair of 12 core E5-2697V2. Most others run the 8 core running at damn near overclocked speeds: E5-2687WV2

some run the speeds of the E5-2697V2 close to the base clock speeds of the E5-2687V2?
thats very interesting indeed!
now as for the motherboard, your saying to go for the ASUS board i choose?
do you know of any better boards in your experience? and about the motherboards your saying to wait for, seeing as ive done no research into them, am i waiting for a new MOBO that's for haswell? and not Xeons?
elaborate?

Thanks for replying!

lmk about the 12 cores, and can you suggest an overclocking software?
also the MOBO's used,

Sleepyhead Media,

There are two motherboards I'd suggest consideration for your dual Xeon E5-2687w build >

1. ASUS Z9PA-U8 ATX Server Motherboard, C602 chipset, LGA 2011 > $290

____ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

2. SUPERMICRO MBD-X9DA7-O Extended ATX Server Motherboard Dual LGA 2011 DDR3 1600/1333/1066/800 > $531.

_____ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

My first choice would be for the Supermicro- they are workstation / server specialists and ASUS seem to focus on high performance gaming. These choices are based on the features, general configuration, RAM and PCIe slots, and general ranking in Passmark Performance Test. These are the motherboards that have the highest systems scores. However, the fastest E5-2687w on Passmark is an HP z820 and these days, the fastest workstations are often HP's z-series, and Dell Precisions.

The TYAN S7053GM2NR is an interesting alternative. Tyan has a very strong reputation in high end workstation and server boards, making $3,000+ boards that support 8X Xeon E7's which can cost $4-6,000 each.

As far as I know, the multiplier and voltages of the E5-2687w are locked and not subject to overclocking. There may- not sure- be ways to more or less lock the first two cores into constant boost at 3.8GHz, but Xeons to ensure stability can not be overclocked, only i-series consumer / gaming CPU's with a K on the end.

What are the applications used? I'm guessing heavy rendering and /or animation. What graphics cards are you thinking of? There are some fantastic deals on Quadro 6000's (6GB) currently.

Here is a system idea from a few months ago, in this example Xeon E5-2687w v2 -based >

TOTAL = $8,895.

If this were an HP or Dell, I believe it would cost in the $12-15,000 range. If a v2 Xeon is used, then 1866 ECC RAM instead of 1600 speed is possible. As well, a PCIe SSD for OS and applications in place of an SATA3 one. Also, I would look into the possibility of using a pair of Firepro W7000's (4GB) (~$750 ea.) in crossfire in place of the Quadro K5000. This is however highly application dependent as I think Adobe CS and possibly Autodesk do not recognize multiple GPU's.

If you can use the E5-2687w v2 , which is about 10% more expensive, they're 3.4 / 4.0GHz, speeds which are not obtainable with the previous first version.

An exciting project- in my view the E5-2687 and v2 version are among the best Xeons ever made.

Still, if you haven't absolutely settled on the E5-2687w, and may not need 16 cores / 32 threads, have a look at the E5-2643 v2, which is 6 cores at 3.5 / 3.8GHz for under $1500- a base rate of 400MHz more than the E5-2687w, 1866 instead of 1600 RAM, 130W instead of 150W- shouldn't require custom liquid cooling, and might save $1,000-1,500 or more depending on eliminating custom cooling:

this is a very old channel, never gets used anymore - but Sleepyhead Media, i patented the name - and have alot in the works and planning in 2014 we hope to be up and going by early 2015.
alot of money, saving and planning has been put into the company.

but for now, that's the build.
