Hi Everyone,

I've been reading up on building my own PC for the last couple of days and comparing what I could get for around $1000 with what I could get in a laptop for the same money. Needless to say, putting a PC together myself seems like the sweetest deal.

But I'm a little hung up on exactly what to buy.

I will use my PC for photo editing in Lightroom, watching Netflix, listening to music, and playing games. I'm mostly interested in strategy titles, but would also like to give Skyrim, The Witcher, and the Dragon Age games a go. It would be very cool if I could get 40-50 FPS on medium to high settings at 1080p on my system. If I need to spend more money to get that, please let me know. But I'd like the price to include an OS (Windows 8.1 I suppose, though I like 7 just fine) and monitor.

I've been pretty blown away by some of the budget builds I've seen posted here, especially damric's budget Intel and AMD systems. But, I can spend a little more money than that, and I'm very much interested in having a system I can upgrade down the line.

If possible, I'd also like to have a "portable" desktop: something light and small that includes a Wireless NIC. Being able to output to my TV screen from time to time would be awesome. I'm thinking of something like option #3 here: http://elitegamingcomputers.com/the-best-gaming-computers-under-800/

Anyway - what would you all suggest for a system? If I have to buy low and then upgrade over time, that's perfectly fine. Just so long as what I'm getting can be upgraded relatively easily.

Thanks for your help!

About the lowest I could get it, changed the case and power supply.

the SSD is definitely something I'd like to include. I'm amazed that I can get this all in under $1000 and still hit the mark I want to hit.

Many thanks for your help. If anyone else thinks they can put something together for cheaper, please speak up. Like I said, I'm not looking to max out all of my settings, but I'm definitely psyched that I can get so much more out of a desktop. It's been so long since I've tried building one, I'd forgotten what a difference it makes.

I'm guessing that I wouldn't have to worry about overheating since I wouldn't be overclocking? Even with the smaller tower?

thanks again for all of the replies!

I'm bumping this for the Saturday readers just to get a sense of what other options I might have. I've seen some other low-cost gaming PCs posted on the board using AMD processors and I'm curious whether or not they'd fit my needs. I'm not interested in overclocking necessarily, as I'd prefer not to install an independent cooling system. But if going with something a little more budget-conscious is possible, I'd love to know. I'd prefer not to sacrifice the SSD, so I know this is maybe a bit more challenging. I don't mean to be picky!

everything I've seen has been right in my wheelhouse, I'm just curious if I can save a little extra money given that I don't need to run every game I play at ultra/max settings. I've been surprised to read how much performance people can get out of a $600 machine (prior to OS, wireless NIC, and monitor).

Any thoughts?

I should add that the last build Kunthakenthe posted is awesome and the most attractive to me at the moment. Just curious if it can be beat on a performance-to-price ratio.
