Tom's article on best gpus for the money says the r9 280 requires two 6-pin connectors. Also says the r9 280x has the same requirement.

That sounds pretty standard for a card of that speed, but on newegg some specifications say a 6pin/8pin connector required like this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Then this r9 280x lists an 8 pin and a 6 pin being required with a recommended 750w psu:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

It doesn't seem to be massively overclocked or anything that would require that much more juice. Then other newegg product pages don't list any psu requirements under the specs tab. I thought hey, AMD must publish what the reference takes, but I don't even see that there under their tech specs:

So when looking for a card and ensuring you have adequate power what do you do? Where do you look other than google and sorting through all the results?

Each card has its own power consumption, the reference model only need 2x6, the sapphire needs 6+8 pins. The only way to know is to pick which card you want to buy, and see what connectors it needs. That or look up for that model the pinouts and amperage on the 12v rail. The wattage they list is way over what the card actually draws.

Most good PSU will already have those connectors.

But where do you look this info up? On newegg it doesn't always seem to be listed.
