Plan to set up two routers on separate networks with one modem

Right, here's the problem: Apple. More specifically the time capsule, it also has the ability to act as a router, however in my experience it has the ability to act as a sub-par router. This was not helped by the introduction of it's little extension friend (Also Apple hardware) which is more unstable than a hippo on a tightrope. Also due to living with parents I don't have the option of changing the router, BUT they will let me litter the house with my own tech.

My plan: Buy a switch, a normal router that actually has a router page, and a few ethernet cables. I then intend to plug the switch into the modem, run a direct burial ethernet cable around the outside of the house up to my room where my router will reside, then have a couple of normal ethernet cables to my console and PC.

My question for you wonderful people: Is there a reason why this won't work and if so, can I make it work?

The modem is a BT openreach, and yes, I am talking about connecting the new router and time capsule into the switch after I plug the switch into the modem. I would plug the new router into LAN 2 but that's taped over and says it's not in use.
