Why Should I get Windows 8.1?

I love Windows 7! I like the ability to change my desktop background, to display my must have gadgets - retro flip clock, lottery results, stock updates, etc. I like having the Start button and being able to simply click on it and access my Favorites, Programs, Documents, etc.

What will happen when I migrate to Win 8? (I am purchasing a gaming laptop and it comes with 8.1 installed).

Will I be able to hit the Start Button and see all my installed programs? Can I transfer all my favorite links from my old PC to Win 8?

I feel much more in control in Win XP/7. Not sure if I can handle Win 8 learning curve.

Are my fears unfounded?

I love Windows 8, I will say the whole start button thing is just dumb. Even the new version of it is just a link to the useless metro UI. Just get a W7 style start menu program. I personally never used gadgets. In my own experience not claiming I have hard data to back this up....W8 is slightly faster, and more stable. There are many programs to customize anything you dont like about it. The desktop portion, works as good if not better imo than 7.

Windows 8 is just different. You may lose some of your gadgets, but you can do pretty much everything you asked about on Windows 8 about as easily as you can on 7. It's just that interfaces are changed, and some are designed for ease of use for tablets more than PC users.

"Why Should I get Windows 8.1?" - you shouldn't

On a more serious note - if that comes preinstalled then you shouldn't worry. Windows 8.1 is not Win 8! You have a start menu, the learning curve is almost nonexistent. To sum it up, your fears are unfounded.

Regarding the importing of links - use google chrome and register an account. All your bookmarks, links, etc will be instantly transferred by google on any pc you log into chrome. This is the simplest way to do it.
