PSU popping sound

So I'm switching out my mother board so I can have an Intel system and when I go to power it on everything starts up for half a second then turns off. After a couple failed attempts the psu makes a pop and nothing works. What happened? I bought another psu and I'm going to try that. Did the new motherboard do this or is it just a coincidence?

It's hard to tell without a comprehensive parts list but a popping sound is usually not a good thing. It's often symptomatic of a low quality or failing PSU. If you purchased a new one and it works, then you're in the clear and you should dispose of that old one ASAP.

Depending on how good/bad and how old your old PSU was, coincidence could certainly be an option.

Good PSUs usually have enough built-in protections to protect themselves from a faulty load so if your PSU went bust, you were likely due for a replacement anyway.
