Alright, so I currently have an AMD phenom II x4 965 edition overclocked to 3.8 ghz, and I get almost 100 percent cpu usage in battlefield 3. I am cooling it with a hyper 212 evo. I am looking into getting the AMD fx 8350, as I purchased an OEM edition of windows and it would be too expensive to buy a new mobo and cpu and os. Anyways, the mobo I have is an ASRock 970 Extreme3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard, and pcpartpicker says that I might have to update my bios. I was wondering if anyone knew from experience if i needed to or not. If I do, could you possibly help me through that process too? Thanks!

Solution
Yes, update the bios, Its a good motherboard, but you do not want to OC the 8350 on that board as its 4+1 Phases may not like it much. That board is vary easy to update the bios on, just need a flash driver and download the bios from ASRock and boot to bios and click on Instant Flash and it will do its thing. P1.80 is the newest. http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/970%20Extreme3/?cat=Download&os=BIOS

Yeah the the x4 965 is a bit older, and its only a quad, BF3 always used my Phenom II x4 940 at 100%.

So would overclocking at all be a bad idea? It starts at 4.0, and says 4.2 turbo. Is that oc'ed or no?

4.2 is just turbo, it just bumbs a few cores to 4.2 and down clocking the others. Keep the CPU where it at, turbo it should be fine, As I said that board will not do anything over because of the power requirements of the CPU. YOu need a better bored for OCing the 8 core.
