Random lockups, suspecting GPU but unsure because games still run without visible artifacts

So for the past couple of weeks, my computer, though not very often and usually pretty far apart, just locks up. I can play games all day on it, but sometimes, no matter what's going on with my computer, whether it be playing games on the highest settings because the framerate remains the same no matter whether I'm playing on minimal or maximum settings (APB is the one game I know of like that), or It's sitting on idle, nothing even running in the background (as far as even going into task manager to kill all the no-tray background processes such as th nvidia shield streaming service). Sometimes it freezes while I'm playing my game or surfing the web (most annoying cases, I beat the case with a vaccum cleaner hose extension once cause it froze during a BattleField 3 firefight that I was winning), usually I wake up to find it froze in the middle of the night while I was asleep.
I got a new soundcard last week, helped my game framerate a little (a whole lot in BF3 specifically, ran it on low on a very low custom resolution now I'm running it on low in big maps @1080p and high on small maps @1080p) but didn't help with the computer freezing (didn't get it to help that anyway, didn't get it under the intention of increasing FPS either, but look how that turned out). what i mean exactly by locking up is the graphics card only displays that one frame. I'm not sure whether it's the gralhics card in early stages of going out and losing stability and just displaying that frame because it was thelast thing it was able to properly render, or whether the CPU or RAM are just stopping completely and the graphics card doesn't know what to do so it just keeps displaying that one frame.
My system Specs:
Stock Dell XPS 410 375Watt PSU
Stock Dell mobo
Intel core 2 duo 1.86 GHz (dual core if you don't know what the name means by "duo")
VIA Vinyl ENVY24 dedicated audio card
XFX GeForce 9800GT Semi-Green Edition (has the original G92 chipset and clocks instead of the G92B chip/clocks but doesn't require power like the regular 9800GTs)
All Stock Cooling
The CPU compound is dry but I'm pretty sure it's still keeping it cool, how wouldn't it with heatsink-o'-giganto on it's side?
GPU compound is as moist as the day I got it.
Running Kombuster at the GPU's stock clocks i see a 80° temp cieling.
I can't temp monitor the CPU this piece of junk mo/bo has no fan speed management or temp monitor

Intermittent problems such as you're experiencing is very difficult to figure out until whatever is the problem if it's hardware becomes pretty obvious. Unless you have spare parts laying around you're sort of restricted and hoping its software related.

I'll suggest some of the things that come to mind,

Could be the psu, usually its a down and out blackout style reboots but can cause flaky system behavior also.

If the hdd is crook it too can cause freezes.

And as you mentioned, the graphics card.

Try Windows Event Viewer for Error level System Events that may give you a clue as to whats happening.

For further diagnosing of HDD, video, cpu and ram have a look here...

I do notice a lack of HDD access, Edit:was gonna run chkdsk tomorrow, but remembered i already did that, and ran defraggler also, which reported my drive's health as good.
