Hi,
In windows 8.1 when I opened an app, eg Alarms, and then closed it using the X in the top right corner (without setting any alarms) it is still running in task manager.

Is there another method of closing a program in 8.1 that makes it stop running? Clicking the X just seems to close the window.

Also I see the store app running and I haven't used it, the computer isn't connected to the net.
Does it just start by itself, or is it connected to something I did?

Is there a way to have apps dormant until I want to use them?

Is it ok to "end task" on these apps in task manager?

Many thanks

Clicking the X to close the window on metro apps doesn't close it fully. It is still in the background incase you need to go back to it. You can close it permanently by using the Alt+F4 or drag the whole app to the bottom of the screen without letting go. It will change to its original app icon and then you can release it.
Yes it is safe to end task in the Task manager.

hover over the top left corner of your screen in desktop mode. when a preview of the other windows pop up, go down but still have your mouse stuck at the side. This action will show you all open apps. Now right click on the app you want to close then close it.

Thanks for your reply, i'd just tried it out and the program is still running in task manager.

What might prompt microsoft store to open when i've not used it?
Does it auto start with some other apps, is it random and not connected to other actions?
