Hi all, I'm kinda new here, so please tell me if I haven't clarified my point on the topic.

I wanted to reset my laptop to the default state, while keeping some files with me. Apologies I'm not a computer expert to know if is or isn't. What I've been thinking about is making another partition, putting my files there and reformatting my primary one. Is it possible?

Any suggestions can be made as long as I get to keep my files, while cleaning out the primary partition. No, I don't have a SSD or do I plan to get one, so that'd be excluded.

Specs:
Hp Pavilion Sleekbook 15-b003se
Windows 8
4gig ram
Intel i5
500 gb hard drive
64-bit

If I missed anything, feel free to ask.

Which ever partition you format the data will be gone once completed. You won't be able to move installed programs and expect them to work but instead you want to move files/folders and the installer for the programs you want to keep.

Great! Thanks for the reply, although, is it really 100% possible to reformat the primary partition? Or do I need to move the Windows files etc. anything to else to know?

Ok, a final thought on how I will do it:

>Shrink my primary partition ( which is C: )

>Copy chosen folders to the new partition

>???

What should I do now? I mean, after I copy the files to the new partition, then how do I reformat the old partition? I'd like a detailed explanation please, after all, the Windows files are there.

EDIT: the format option is grayed out while selecting the primary partition on diskmgmt.msc ;-; and I can't mark the new partition as active. Any help?
