Hi there,

My new laptop has the i7 4710MQ and it runs at about 93-99 degrees of celsius while gaming. BF4 and other high demanding games. Is this really bad for my laptop or are they "okay" temps for a gaming laptop? Also, is a cooler a good investment, because I heard that they do not really make a big difference.

Solution
Those temperatures are "okay" for a laptop CPU. Intel lists the max safe temperature for tCASE as 100C. Core temps can go even higher before damage is done. Since you're staying around 100C max, I would say that you aren't in any risk of damage.

That said, cooler temperatures are never a bad thing. Just make sure you're at least playing on a hard surface where there can be some airflow between your laptop and the surface you're playing on. A laptop cooler will help a little on hard surfaces, and help a lot on soft surfaces like carpets or blankets.

If this was a desktop processor, yes. Laptop processors are different beasts.
May I know what laptop it is as I want to know how thick it is because this is too high.

Anyways, laptop will overheat when playing games like Battlefield at a temperature at about 70+ FPS.

That's why a laptop cooler is needed or you fry everything inside.

I sure hope that they wont damage it too much because I need this laptop for school (software engineer). I''ll still get a laptop cooler as theyre not THAT pricey. Thank you for your answer.

Go to your Power Options in Control Panel. Set to (Balanced) Recommended. Then click on Change Plan Settings. Then click on Change Advanced Power Settings. Scroll down and click on Processor Power Management. Click on Maximum processor State and set to 96% under Plugged in and Battery. This disables the Turbo Boost and will drop temps by around 15-20c without losing any performance in gaming.

Keep in mind the I7 4710mq is a BEAST! You dont need that much processor to run any game! Disabling Turbo doesn't affect your performance one bit! I have it and this is what I do to game for hours!

I will average 74-76c cpu for hours on Crysis3, Far Cry3, Bioshock Infinite etc... Set V-SYNC to lock FPS. Lower settings from ultra to High or even medium. I have a Sager NP7338 with a GTX860m. Even though the pc is a BEAST you don't always have to prove it! All of these tips will help your temps!

Thank You ragztem!! Your solution absolutely fixed my problem! One question though. When in high performance mode the fan runs on high speed (or near high speed). It never used to do that before. Do you have any recommendations?
