How to reinstall windows 7 without wiping hard drive.

If you worried about losing the data.. you should have a backup anyway (your HDD can fail AT ANY TIME... WITHOUT WARNING)..
So look at this an an opportunity to sort that.. buy some storage.. backup.. and then you can do the best option when you get your mobo.. which is a completely clean install.

Make a folder on your Hardrive Calld what you want and put stuff in ther but dont make the folder in
Program Files and My Document folder so utside those windows folders but still in your C:/
so put it in
C:\ uteside windows files so it will be safe ther!
windows won't delete user create folders

if you want be tardy.. it will prob work like this..
- you install new Mobo
- windows fails to start
- you insert Windows disk.. can try repair if it gives you that option
- otherwise..go to install..
- it will say already a version of windows.
- you get option to do fresh.. or reinstall keeping options..
This is a bit risky.. it will probably work like this.. but you really need a backup .. just in case it does not work.

Always have more than 1 partition. It's just good practice.
100 gigs for Windows, rest you can divide how you please.
That way you aren't screwed when windows decides to act up and situations like these don't arise.
Windows-key+R. type 'diskmgmt.msc', start partitioning. Can only have 1 Active (your boot-partition) partition per disk/harddrive but lots of extended/logical.
Always have at least 1 backup of your important stuff on other harddrive or DVD/USB.

When I need to re-install Windows, I either buy a new HDD or install on a spare then move my files over... it is the safest, most fool-proof method.
Yes, it gets expensive but that is also pretty much the only way I can motivate myself to do a proper HDD clutter cleanup, re-organization and consolidation.

If you install Windows on a drive that already has it installed you will see a Windows.old file on the C: drive. The older install with it settings should be in there. But you may have to pull out files and registry keys, etc to get programs to be working, unless it is pictures and such that you want to back up.
But to be on the safe side, get a cheap USB-drive or something to back it up to, as someone stated earlier, drives will always fail at one time, it is just a matter of time, and luck.
If you, like me, have a second drive, put them there. I have one for games and such, and not Windows, as it is on my SSD. The second drive, where the OS is not going to be installed is not touched.
