So my rig is a sandy bridge i7 and I need a gtx 600 or better. I'm looking for my best option without having to mess with a new motherboard.

Decide on your budget and then get the best card you can afford.

The hierarchy goes like this from lowest to highest performance:
660 - 660 Ti - 760 - 670 - 680 - 770 - 780 - 780 Ti

Yes, you actually need a card that can run the game with the settings you prefer. The game video is merely streamed to the shield, not run on it.
