I have a fairly new build using I7 4790k, z97 motherboard, 2 8gb sticks of gskill trident 2400 cas 10 ram. Window 8.1 64 bit. My issue is when i download my memory usage climbs a bit which is normal but once download is finished the mem usage keeps climbing to like 90%. I have look through task manager and nothing is using too much ram, I have ran a couple of malware scans, ran memtest. If i restart pc it goes back to normal until i download something. I use a kingston 120 ssd and 1 tb wd black.

More about : ram usage climbs max downloads

Change the download location. How big are the downloads? Songs? Albums? Movies? FHD Movies?

Well downloading big files like games or Movies (1GB or above in general) can use RAM. But I've never heard downloading anything making RAM get even close to 90% when you have 8GB or above, let alone 16GB.
Maybe its your HDD. if possible, add another HDD and test it for RAM usage while downloading.

did you check superfecth/prefetch settings? normally W8 will disable them with SSD. but maybe it failed to do that with yours...

Try it with a new HDD, but check first what PEJUman said, it is a valid possibility.

an update changed ram and hdd. Still no luck but i installed 2x4gb sticks of team dark and it runs up to the same 90% mark, it did with the 16gb. Next is re install windows and if that dont work maybe mem controller / motherboard?

Maybe a BIOS reset/ CMOS clean? That will dissolve any erratic settings applied to memory by BIOS. Also, clean re-install seems an easier option but may not be able to solve the issue as its hardware based.

i strongly think a third party software which is causing these problems have you checked the ram usage in the safe mode ?

well i finally figured it out the PEJUman was on the right track it was " HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Ndu "

Change the start value to "4" (Disable) and restart your PC

thanks for all your answers
