Due to some problems with my wireless signal, I want to move my wireless closer to the center of my home. I have tried a variety of configurations. Best thing I have going right now is an AP connected to my wireless router in the basement. Unfortunately, it's still pretty shady. I think it's because the hardware is old. This is what it looks like:

Gateway > Router >Switch (connecting all entertainment center hardware) > AP

Here's what I'd like to do:

Gateway > Switch > 4 Port Wireless router (all entertainment center hardware)

Unfortunately, when I tried that with the existing hardware, I had no internet connection even though the wireless icon in Windows said internet access. I would think this would work as long as the WAN port on the router s connected to the switch. Any thoughts as to why it didn't?

The router should be connected directly to the gateway. Go back to your original setup, and run a secondary AP if you need to expand the wifi coverage.

That's what I have now, it's not working properly. That's why I'm looking for another option.

Is the secondary AP receiving the internet signal? What model gear is all this stuff?

Gets a signal, just randomly disappears a few times a day. It is older hardware. I picked up a TP-LINK 300n router today and immediately saw improved speed and signal range. Still a little weak in the far reaches of my house, but that's from basement to second floor and across the house. I could move the gateway upstairs, but then I'm splitting the signal from the cable instead of having a dedicated jack.

So the WiFi AP had gone bad. Glad to hear that the signal improved with the TP link.

Depending on your setup, you could move it to a more central location, or setup a 2nd AP on the 2nd floor to improve your coverage.
