Black screen upon start up of Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5934

My old Toshiba laptop (operating Windows Vista) revealed early in its life that the battery has a rather limited life, so I decided to use it as a stationary computer with the battery charger almost permanently attached. It has worked fine this way for many years, but the battery capacity has (of course) become very low. Recently my wife became concerned about the computer always being rather hot, so she persuaded me to disconnect the charger at night, and I could not see why not.

Yesterday morning the laptop would not start up. The screen remains black in spite of everything else seemingly working normally. The three green lights on front (external power, power status and battery indicator) are all lit up constantly and some mechanical device is running internally. I cannot hear if it is the ventilator, hard drive or both, but to my ear they sound like they always did.

Although I cannot see, why even a completely dead battery, when backed up by the power charger, could be the culprit, I decided to keep the battery charger on overnight, but the situation was the same this morning. By the way, the battery is not completely dead, as the ventilator and/or hard drive continues to run, when I disconnect the charger.

I have tried, without any result, the procedure recommended by some other web-site, of shutting off the power, removing the battery and keeping the start button down for a minute. I also connected the monitor of my PC to the laptop without seeing anything, but I am not sure, if switching to an external monitor requires a command, that I am unaware of.

I would surely appreciate any help I can get.

Jensie
