Specs:
ASRock z77 extreme 4
I-5 3570k
8 gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 (i think it's the 1600)
Toshiba 2TB HDD
Seasonic 650w PS

I just burned out a GeForce GTX 570 (had it for a couple of years) and need to find a new graphics card. My PS can only handle a single card setup in the $300 and under range. I have used Nvidia since I had issues with Radeon many years ago. I have been researching and it seems the Radeon cards outperform the Nvidia cards but tend to need more power and get a lot hotter. Is this true? I am looking at the R9 270X range. Would that work and what would be comparable in Nvidia. I am knowledgeable enough to get into trouble but smart to ask for help. Please advise on the following questions:
Nvidia or AMD? (heat and power consumption vs. stability as I have read?)
best options under $300 (GTX 760? R9 270x?)
any other information to help with this decision. I have to talk with my wife so I need to be as informed as possible to confuse her so she just says get whatever you want, lol!!!!

Thank you in advance

r9 280x is within your budget range assuming you're in the United States. (http://pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-100363l) excluding tax and what not... It'll probably be the best performing card,

Answering your question, the r9 270x doesn't really have an official competitor performance wise in the 700 series, at least in my opinion. It's the in between area of the gtx 750Ti and GTX 760. Maybe closest thing would be the GTX 660Ti or something.
