Which of the 280x vapor-x models is better? If the tri-x is b etter is there a reason why it is cheaper every where I look? The prices have me mixed up performance wise.

The cooler design and i think the vapor x has a better cooler so it will run cooler and quieter. Also the vapor x has a ligher clock speed and memory speed from what i saw, so from the factory it is faster.

Tigerdirect is known to have higher prices on many items BTW so shop around.

Performance Summary:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/R9_280X_Direct_...

If you're going to get the R9-280X I recommend the Asus version ($300).

The Asus GTX770 performs almost identically, though it "only" has 2GB of VRAM. There might be some NVidia specific reasons to go with the GTX770 though (such as Shadowplay for recording, PhysX, or if considering a G-Sync monitor in the future, or considering STREAMING to another PC which will work best using the NVENC encoder that Shadowplay uses).

*Or perhaps wait a bit and get the GTX860 if it's a reasonable value and has 3GB of VRAM. Hopefully some solid info in a few weeks.

That sounds awesome unfortunately I cant wait too long. Fall classes start in less than a month and im wanting/trying to put together a pc before than. I dont record or stream at all lol I just wanted to use the pc for gaming and schoolwork... and I dont know what gsync means haha. Brb, going to google.

gsync requires a gsync monitor so its not really worth getting a card for that reason right now for your time frame, i like having my 3gb frame buffer on my 7970 which is a 280x even for 1080p gaming. I had the same decision between the 770 and 7970 as the 700 series came out when i was looking at gpus, and there practically similar in performance and minus nvidia features and amd features pick the cheapest

Like photonboy i like the asus model for anything AMD, but the sapphire toxic tri-x cooler is great as well, it does occupy 2.5 pci-e slots as the cooler is taller than two pci-e slots.
